Green is a compelling story of a determined woman finding her own truth and purpose while seeking her father’s acceptance. The daughter of the Greek sun god Helios, Circe has an unusual ability to turn nasty and vulgar men into pigs. Growing up with her brother and sister, Circe has watched her siblings stay in line to placate Helios, but she refuses to conform. When Circe protects a female servant from a wealthy entitled man and turns him into a pig, Helios exiles his daughter to the island of Aiaia, a dumping ground for criminals, and a sanctuary for women and children fleeing aggressors. She soon learns her way around the magical island, saving woman from unscrupulous men who dock at the island, while punishing the men, turning them into pigs as their inner selves.
As keeper of Aiaia, she gathers a group of women, Nysa, Ione, Melaia and others who each develops specific skills to help her rule the land. Over time, an intriguing man, Theron, from the land of Itharys comes to the island, and soon after, Circe’s sister Pasiphae visits who advises Circe to “Turn fear into law,” and build a kingdom with the island. Ever so patient, Theron questions Circe about how quickly she judges and punishes men and makes her think about her impulsive actions. Circe realizes she was tricked to rule the prison on the island because Helios counted on her punishing the scoundrels while she maintained a safe haven for victims. When Theron and Circe act on their deep-growing feelings, Helios arrives to manipulate Circe even more. While Circe does her best to deny her feelings for Theron, she must curtail the turmoil Helios causes in order to save her island and restore truth and justice for all occupants.
My favorite impactful lines from the book were: Judgment waits for the whole story; Power begins with listening; and Praise teaches faster than pain when someone has been hungry for it.
I found some parts of the story confusing despite the in-depth world building. The extensive world building and continuous descriptions of the foods and settings, like the flora and wildlife, slowed the pacing in an already very long book. The characters were definitely interesting, but there were a lot to keep track of. The main characters, Circe, Theron, Nysa and even Pasiphae had flaws and it was good to see them grow throughout the book. The dialogue was natural and flowed well.
I especially appreciated the ending where the author included a section of Odysseus visiting Circe with some of his men. The stories of individual characters after the epilogue are a nice supplement, but the book ran so long it seemed the extra stories could’ve been made into an additional book.
