A recipient of an NEA fellowship in poetry and the Edgar Allan Poe Award in fiction, D. James Smith’s poems and stories have appeared recently in The Malahat Review, New Millennium Writings & The Notre Dame Review. His books include the novel My Brother’s Passion (Permanent Press, 2004) and three collections of poems, The Dead Ventriloquist (Ahsahta Press, 1995) and Sounds The Living Make (S. F. Austin State Univ., 2012) and Cafe Dissertation (HipPocket Press, 2023.) I have come off of a streak writing novels for teens. I consider myself a poet, but needed to do something to "decompress" from poetry. I also needed to laugh and wanted to see if I could write humor. I knew it would be a huge challenge. I think comedic actors are seen as lightweight and this is just an ignorant take on the matter.
