They used to be at every gas station along I-70 in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. Also, the character is a chance to re-tell stories I've heard, often in bars. The original title was JACKALOPE WALKS INTO AN INDIAN BAR. I am not a heavy drinker, but I love the stories that get shared in cafes and taverns. Also, I have mixed ancestry, so the Jackalope figure is perfect for explaining who I am. I recently had another mixed-blood person tell me the theme of invisibility was important to him. Issues of gender fluidity are also part of the jackalope character, from both European and Indigenous American traditions. (less)
