Sometimes writer's block only means you can't figure out where to go next on your story. Sometimes I will skip ahead to a scene I know is going to happen. You may get inspiration writing that scene to go back and pick it up. And you can always rewrite. I think a lot of writers get blocked because they want to get as close as they can the first time. A Requiem for Logan Roy

Logan Roy's entrance into the second episode of "Succession" begins with a question: "Why does everybody ask how I'm doing?"

Iron in the Blood by Jay Busbee

I enjoyed this more than I expected. Being an Alabama alum, I've seen several books like this over my lifetime, and this is well-plowed ground, so to speak. Still, Busbee manages to find a few nuggets that I hadn't heard before, and paints broadly th ...more

This examination of Jacques-Louis David's portrait of Marat's assassination is a quick, satisfying read. It does occasionally hand you a sentence or two that is not remotely in the English language, but filled with grad school and dissertation speak. ...more

I could say a lot about the subject matter, but I'm going to focus on the style. This novel has no actual scenes, dialogue or description of the principal characters, an American expatriate couple living (mostly) in Berlin in the late 2010s. They are ...more
