Lisa Ann Gallagher was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 7, 1967. She grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and became a part of the thriving mid-80s Detroit alternative music scene during her teens - as the lead singer of an all-girl band and editor of a punk fanzine, then later as a supporter and friend to many other bands. Lisa Ann left Detroit in 1991 and spent the next 14 years exploring a variety of jobs (including as a product trainer for Cadillac), traveling the world and writing. Her first novel, 'Flower of Fire', a thriller about a modern-day Typhoid Mary, was published in October 2010. A collection of 18 poems, 'Incantations' followed in 2011. Step away for an hour, a night, a week - whatever it takes. Trying to write through writer's block is an exercise in frustration. Instead, go do something that is completely unconnected to writing. Have dinner with friends. Walk the dogs. Rent a great movie. Pop open a bottle of wine and sit on the back porch and watch the stars. Don't think about writing - just think about living. The writing will float back.(less)

Places of Fiction: the Desert

All month long we've been blogging about the personality of cities, in fiction.

I'm going to deviate (just slightly) to write about topography, specifically the desert.

In part, the desert is on my mind because this coming weekend I'm headed to Arizona to visit family (yeah, vacation!). But I started thinking about fiction that takes place in the desert.

There are many deserts, of course: the Gobi De Read more of this blog post »

“I am eternal. I am the Eater of Worlds.”

Stephen King
“The energy you drew on so extravagantly when you were a kid, the energy you thought would never exhaust itself - that slipped away somewhere between eighteen and twenty-four, to be replaced by something much duller, something as bogus as a coke high: purpose, maybe, or goals, or whatever rah-rah Junior Chamber of Commerce word you wanted to use. It was no big deal; it didn't go all at once, with a bang. And maybe, Richie thought, that's the scary part. How you didn't stop being a kid all at once, with a big explosive bang, like one of that clown's trick balloons. The kid in you just leaked out, like the air of a tire.”
Stephen King, It

Patrick Ness
“He loved physical books with the same avidity other people loved horses or wine or prog rock. He'd never really warmed to ebooks because they seemed to reduce a book to a computer file, and computer files were disposable things, things you never really owned. He had no emails from ten years ago but still owned every book he bought that year. Besides, what was more perfect an object than a book? The different rags of paper, smooth or rough under your fingers. The edge of the page pressed into your thumbprint as you turned a new chapter. The way your bookmark - fancy, modest, scrap paper, candy wrapper - moved through the width of it, marking your progress, a little further each time you folded it shut.”
Patrick Ness
