Two authors, a mother and daughter, write under the name D. C. Cowan. The Legend of the Black Rose and The Children of Kara Series was written by Cowan, Sr. over thirty years ago. She is a graduate of the prestigious Spelman College in Atlanta, GA where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. With quiet tenacity, Cowan has been writing her books for over thirty years. A pillar to her community, she was a director for many years at a local recreation center and at her local church she taught Sunday School and received recognition from the members for her contributions.

As a youth, Cowan, Jr. performed for six years as a pre-professional ballerina with the Asheville Civic Ballet. She is a graduate of Wake Forest University known to some

It's certainly a struggle trying to get my books out there. It's hard to compete with the different big name publishing companies. But I would rather enjoy the art of writing and sell a few then to have a literary agent and publisher forcing me to be creative so they can sell thousands.

Regardless, I do have a strategy to sell more books in the future. As I heard from one author, sometimes the best way to help yourself is to help others. I own several websites and use them as a way to reach people surfing the web. One site I feature books from the Diverse Book Tour; by helping other authors I can hope that visitors to my blog will also find an interest in my books as well. I have a newsletter sign up where I give away one of my eBooks for free. I currently have eight so giving away one isn't such a problem for me.

Soon I hope to start a business to help low income and minority authors still achieve their goals to publish a good book by hiring editors and book cover designers for a low costs. This is my future plan, but by helping others it will get the word out about my company and books I've published as well.

My mom distributes books at every family reunion and to friends throughout her workplace. She's much more talkative then I am so word of mouth is her best strategy.

If you're an author I wish you much success as well.

Elemental Angels, I started writing when I was 15 and finished in college. I was greatly inspired by anime and various fantasy novels and movies I enjoyed as a youth, but, many of which, I no longer would enjoy now. Now, I more inspired by life events and people that I've met such as my book My Amoretto which was inspired by people that I met in Italy. As I grow older, my books are slowly starting to come back to reality and venturing away from foreign worlds like my work Angelic Heroes Trilogy. I don't know if I'll ever write more fantasy perhaps graphic novels which is something that I want to explore because of my love of art, but we'll see.(less)
