Writing is a passion and an important outlet in my life. I was born in Belgium, immigrated to South Africa where I lived for fifteen years, before finally settling in Toronto, Canada. As the saying goes, ‘Life is a journey,’ and I try to use all of my varied experiences and exposure to diverse cultures to enrich my writing.

Another passion in my life is a deep love of animals. Mysterious and mystical felines are especially close to my heart, and I use my writing to bring awareness to their issues. The importance of spaying/neutering and support of animal rescue organizations are causes I champion as often as I can.

Ostriches

Living in Belgium, my mom and dad had never seen an ostrich. They had seen such a bird on television, of course, but they had never seen a real live one.

If there’s one thing I hate in books it’s animal abuse. I don’t care what happens to the various characters, they can be shot, stabbed, beaten, or whatever, it’s all the same to me, but making animals suffer, that is not acceptable at all.

Yet this is precisely what Tana French does. Not only does she bring animal abuse in her stories, she does so in the most gruesome ways. She isn’t just cruel in her descriptions, she is sadistic.
What’s more, the animal abuse has nothing to do with the story. What she describes is purely on the sidelines, for the fun of it so to speak.

Needless to say, I’m done with Tana French. When I was looking for a new book and came across reviews for Tana French’s books, I thought I’d found a winner. The critics describe her stories as winners, entertaining, something to look forward to.

I wonder if those critics read any of her books or purely sucked their reviews out of their thumbs. Admittedly, the one book I (partly) read wasn’t bad, but neither was it very good. If anything, it was rather long winded. Something that could be said in five minutes she dragged on into an hour, going on and on and on about the same thing.

Still, I kept on listening to the audiobook because the story wasn’t bad and I was mildly intrigued. When the first case of animal abuse was described, I found it disturbing, when the second case found its way into the story, I found the description unnecessary, when a third case came up I had enough. I switched the audiobook off and deleted it.

Why do authors do this? Why do they think it necessary to bring animals into a story and killing them in the most horrific ways? Is that how Tana French gets her kicks? It’s clear that she loves dogs, yet cats and sheep not so much. She must have a sadistic mind to come up with these killing scenarios.

Needless to say, I won’t read a second book by Tana French. The critics can praise her all they want, I find her stories nothing special, in fact, her longwinded descriptions are fine in the beginning, but after a while they get boring. It got to the point where I was thinking … alright already, get on with it.

Usually, before starting a book I research if there is animal abuse in the story. If I come across a yes, I avoid that story. Yet with the first book of Tana French, I forgot to research the animal abuse factor. Who would have thought that a story set in an idyllic Irish countryside would have such horrific and graphic details?
