Lauren finds Real Life overrated, and has always preferred to inhabit alternate realities, both self-created and created by others. However, after being burned by certain fandoms one too many times, Lauren decided to focus her reality escape attempts on her own creations. She's much happier now, although she still enjoys fandoms - in small doses.

A believer in love, hope, compassion, and similar squishy ideals, Lauren endeavors to create stories that both gut-punch and elevate her readers. Emotional rollercoasters are what make fiction fun, after all.

When she's not avoiding Real Life responsibilities, Lauren enjoys dancing at music festivals, spending time in nature, and tending to her cat's every whim. She lives in North Florida with her

Do you throw your hands up and say, "well, I guess I'll live here now!" Of course not. You backtrack and find another way around or through the block. Use the same principle when writing. Often, when I feel "stuck," it's because what I'm trying to do is not what the story needs. When I backtrack or think of another approach, the "block" inevitably clears away.

Getting up and moving helps too. A nice long walk in the woods always rejuvenates the mind and body. (less)

Hi Kathryn! That is an *excellent* question. :)

The Catalyst Moon series began as a way for me to integrate my favorite OCs, (original characters), from my Star Wars fanfiction into original fiction. Some of their backstories and personalities made the transition pretty smoothly, but other aspects of their characters did not translate well. For example, Kali was originally created as a Jedi Knight, but her background as a mage living in a bastion all of her life meant that mage!Kali's motivations would be much different than Jedi!Kali's. Much of her personality remained the same, but her attitude toward the world was very different.

It took a LOT of effort to translate Kali, Stonewall, and Milo from the world of Star Wars to the world of Catalyst Moon. At times, I felt hopelessly overwhelmed, sometimes wondering if I shouldn't have just made all new characters that would fit in the world how I wanted them! But in the end, my characters drive my stories and helped shape the world I created in CM, so I'm glad I put in the time and work. It was totally worth it. :)

In a similar vein, writing original fiction vs. fanfiction comes with its own host of challenges. There's good stuff; I'm the "boss" of this world, so I make my own canon. Things work out more or less how I prefer. ;) As for the challenging aspect...well, let's just say there were *many* occasions where I wished for a wiki to search for ideas! Making up swear words is also *really*tough! (But they are essential.)

Thank you for the insightful question!

Stay awesome,

Assassin’s Mercy – bonus tidbit

[late summer] 150 Atal Although I have known several meridians, I have never known anyone like Verve. Sorry – this isn’t supposed to be a love letter, just some notes for later perusal, but it seems she’s always on my mind.  Anyway. Meridians. Right. Since Verve is one, she agreed to let me jot down … Continue reading Assassin’s Mercy – bonus tidbit → Read more of this blog post »

“We who make stories know that we tell lies for a living. But they are good lies that say true things, and we owe it to our readers to build them as best we can. Because somewhere out there is someone who needs that story. Someone who will grow up with a different landscape, who without that story will be a different person. And who with that story may have hope, or wisdom, or kindness, or comfort. And that is why we write.”
Neil Gaiman, The Graveyard Book
