Welcome to my Goodreads Author page! I'm so happy you are here. I love readers and I love hearing how my writing impacts you. I believe in the power of fiction to open our eyes to the deeper truth of what it means to be human. None of us can, or would want to, live through the tragedies, pains, or mistakes of other people, but by reading the stories of folks whose lives are different from ours we broaden our capacity for empathy and expand the embrace of our compassion. One of the things I take for truth is that more empathy and greater compassion will make the world a better place for all of us.

During my college years (Bryn Mawr College and University of Washington) I studied psychology with the goal of working as a clinical psychologist.

There are times when my imagination seems to have dried up and I feel stuck. My favorite remedy for this is to teach a writing class or at least prepare to teach one. My prep always includes collecting a few new poems to use as jumping off points. The process of reading poetry, especially exposing myself to new poets, is a great way to get my writer brain turned on. The next thing I do for class prep is create one or two new writing prompts. Once I've done that, I'm usually off to the races.(less)

She's going to show up later when you need her--when you're revising--but in the beginning, in that first, raw stage when you're just getting the words out, she is only going to get in the way and shut you down. So when you hear those critical phrases in your mind (you know the ones that say "who would ever want to read this?' or "you're no writer" or "what do you think you're doing?") recognize that voice--it's your inner critic. And tell her to take a hike!(less)

Trees

I wrote a book (What We Take for TruthWhat We Take for Truth) that takes place in a tiny town in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The whole place is surrounded by huge trees, mostly evergreens. Trees play a major role in the story.
A couple of other books, both of them quite amazing reads, have come out lately that focus on trees: The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Read more of this blog post »

I love a story full of characters who read like people I might meet in my own life, but whose lives play out in a time and place I know nothing about. Fire Music is one of those stories. I love a story brimming with rich detail where the sights and s ...more
