I'd like to go to Whippoorwill Hollow, the fictional setting in rural Virginia in the late 1960's of my novels, The Closing and Old Wounds to the Heart. In writing these stories, the characters came alive for me. They're like old friends. I think about them often. Living with them again would be a great gift. (less)

There's nothing quite like the moment when you've finished a jag of writing and you know you've brought it to the highest level of quality you can attain and it feels good and right and artful. Discussing your story with someone who read it and really enjoyed it is also a pretty amazing thrill, especially when they tell you something they saw in the story that you never thought of when you wrote it. The story has taken on a life of its own then, and its readers own it as much as you do. (less)

The Killer Storm

On August 20, 1969, Cindy and I awoke at 2 a.m. to a roaring, pounding din on the tin roof of our house in White Hall, Virginia. We jumped out of bed and ran to the window.

Lightning streaked across the sky. Thunder crashed. Through a silver sheet of water, we could barely see the big oak beside the house, its thick branches bowed downward, a lake swirling around the base of its trunk.

“Hardest rain

This is a unique book. Some reviewers pan it as a stock story with graphic porn. It's not that. Although there is graphic porn, it serves a purpose. Initially, I thought it would spin out to be a story about an Epstein-like heinous predator, an older ...more

Anne Tyler is the master of the quirky character that fascinates you. This story is filled with them. The protagonist is the best of the lot, maybe the best of all Tyler's novels I've read so far. Trapped in a suffocating existence where her older hu ...more
