I was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia, and grew up with a love of reading thanks to my mother who declared that 'you are never lonely if you have a book to read'.
I had my first library card at the age of 2, and developed a vivid imagination and a delight in story telling.

My favourite books during childhood were the adventure stories of Enid Blyton - 'The Secret Seven' and 'The Famous Five' - and later the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries.

As a primary school teacher I used storytelling and drama as the base for my classroom practice, creating stories and plays through which my students were encouraged to develop deeper understanding and knowledge of the curriculum concepts.

During thirty years in the classroom, I observed the st

My new book is 'Taya Bayliss - Snake Charmer'. In it Taya has to face her fear of snakes as she tries to put together clues.

The idea to include a snake, in this case a carpet python, in the story came from an incident in my back garden.

We have a small aviary in the garden inhabited by six little Peachface parrots. One evening, rather than settling down for the night as they usually do, the birds were making an almighty noise. I looked out to see a carpet python dangling from a nearby tree and slowly making its way to the roof of the aviary.

Clearly it had Peachface on its menu for dinner that night. I went out there (How brave am I?!!) and rattled branches, the cage wiring, anything that would cause vibration to scare the snake away. It went, but came back the next night and the night after that.
I ended up calling a the local snake man who for $80 removed my reptile, after laughing at me and telling me it was just a little one. It was about three metres long - certainly big enough for me.

So, in the new story, Taya has to be brave too. She has to learn how to co-exist with Fifi the carpet python that lives in the roof of Chris's grandparents' farmhouse. (less)

“Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul. When writers make us shake our heads with the exactness of their prose and their truths, and even make us laugh about ourselves or life, our buoyancy is restored. We are given a shot at dancing with, or at least clapping along with, the absurdity of life, instead of being squashed by it over and over again. It's like singing on a boat during a terrible storm at sea. You can't stop the raging storm, but singing can change the hearts and spirits of the people who are together on that ship.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird
