Born and raised in the Cream City, she has tried to leave many times, but seems to be drawn to this quirky city that smells of beer and alewives.

Lori is the Senior Food & Dining Writer for OnMilwaukee. She is also the author of "Milwaukee Food: A History of Cream City Cuisine" (History Press) and the co-host of FoodCrush, a podcast “for people who eat.”

Her newest book "Field to Fork: Farm Fresh Recipes from the Dairy State" will be released in Fall of 2023.

She has written recipes for entities including the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and the American Butter Institute. Her writing has also been featured in a variety of publications including “Cheese Connoisseur,” “Cooking Light,” “Edible Milwaukee,” “Milwaukee Magazine” and the “Milwaukee Jo

It's a complicated question -- but Alice Cooper wasn't necessarily wrong. :)

In fact, majority of authorities appear to agree that Milwaukee means "good land" (see Wisconsin Historical Collections., iii, pp. 290, 337; xii, p. 393; Handbook, p. 863. See also D. H. Kelton, Annals of Fort Mackinac 1884 ed., p. 150).

As for the spelling "Millioke," it's important to remember that the Algonquin languages that gave names to these and many other places in the midwest were oral.

Place names like "Milwaukee" weren't written down by the Native American tribes themselves, but by white settlers who had little familiarity with the subtleties of tribal tongues. And that means the spellings are inevitably variable.

Milwaukee, for example, first appears as "Melleoiki," which may or may not have meant "good land" in Chippewa. Other relatively widely accepted meanings include "gathering place by the water" and "beautiful or pleasant lands".

Milwaukee's food and dining scene has blown up over the past two decades, and the city has become a true destination for food lovers. Why not share that "secret" with the world?(less)

Authorship: It's so surreal

A few weeks ago, I was notified that the release date on my new book "Milwaukee Food: A History of Cream City Cuisine" is September 21, 2015.

Not more than a few weeks prior, I had a set of page proofs in my hand, which I painstakingly examined for errors (for what felt like the bazillionth time).

And yet, the entire prospect of being the author of an actual physical
