Chaplain Jerry “J.” Higgins, Jr. is a Christian author, ordained chaplain, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, mentor, and founder of AnchorPoint Press.

His writing is shaped by a personal journey of faith, struggle, restoration, and calling. After walking through painful experiences early in life and spending years wrestling with faith, Jerry eventually came to understand that God had never stopped pursuing him. His story now fuels his desire to encourage others who feel broken, overlooked, pressured, or unsure of their purpose.

Jerry is the author of the Beyond the Scoreboard devotional workbook series, created to help athletes discover their identity beyond performance, stats, playing time, and the opinions of others. He is also the author of Revel

Hello N.L. Mayers,

I was an athlete until about 2 years ago. I played football, rugby, ran cross country, and competed in track and field in high school. I sustained an achilles tendon injury in high school that benched me for the majority of the season. I joined the U.S. Marine Corps right out of high school. I kept the physical routines and workouts as best I could after the Marine Corps. I coached little league baseball, basketball, and softball for a few years as well.

I sustained a debilitating injury about 2 years ago that left me barely able to walk without support for about 1.5 years and I am slowly getting back to some sort of a regiment again. So, I understand the ups and downs of being an athlete, as a starter, a bench player, a practice player, not being the best athlete, being the best on the team at certain things, being a leader on a team, staff and support staff for a team, and what it feels like to have an injury that sets you back where you do not feel like you are part of the team.

My motivation for my books has been my children, their teammates, and other athletes that I know. Watching my oldest and her college team being raked across the coals by their coaches at every game and during a particular pre-season tournament for 45 minutes between games, having each one the girls in tears before the next game due to a loss, not giving them time to hydrate, rest, or eat before the next game, and then not acknowledging their win because they did not mercy rule the other team or a teammates first softball career home run sparked a fire inside of me so hot that nothing has been able to put it out. I could not set back and watch any longer. So, I wrote single bus ride devotional for the girls to read on their 8 hr bus ride home.

They enjoyed it so much that they asked for more, so I created the Beyond the Scoreboard: Softball Edition for the team. The schools women's lacrosse team heard about it and I created the Beyond the Scoreboard: Lacrosse Edition for them. That is how the Beyond the Scoreboard series got started. I am releasing a new book later this month as part of this series.(less)

Wrestling With a Difficult Passage Without Changing Jesus

Reflections on Matthew 15:21–28 and the Canaanite Woman

For the past 24 hours, I have been wrestling with a sermon — beginning while I was sitting in the pew listening to it and continuing long after I left the service. I have thought about it, prayed about it, returned to the Scriptures, reread Matthew 15, and spent time looking at the parallel account in Mark 7. I have tried very intentionally no Read more of this blog post »
