Rounding up from 3.5 stars.

Not quite the page turner I was expecting, felt a little slow and padded at times, but a fun whodunnit that had me changing my mind as we explored the different characters.

Wow wow wow! This book deserves all the accolades and hype. A bit of a slow start and took a moment to pick up/feel comfortable with the absurdist humor (“Wait, am I supposed to be laughing during a book dealing about slavery?”). Definitely tough to ...more

“Between the wish and the thing the world lies waiting.”
Cormac McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses

Walt Whitman
“Long have you timidly waded
Holding a plank by the shore,
Now I will you to be a bold swimmer,
To jump off in the midst of the sea,
Rise again, nod to me, shout,
And laughingly dash with your hair.”
Walt Whitman, Song of Myself

Cormac McCarthy
“Things separate from their stories have no meaning. They are only shapes. Of a certain size and color. A certain weight. When their meaning has become lost to us they no longer have even a name. The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place.”
Cormac McCarthy, The Crossing

“Scars have the strange power to remind us that our past is real.”
Cormac McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses

Jim Jarmusch
“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to."

[MovieMaker Magazine #53 - Winter, January 22, 2004 ]”
