I began writing in my 20s - after university had made me realize how autodidactic fresh writing actually is ('the subconscious, the subconscious,' as Cormac McCarthy once said to Oprah Winfrey, the latter rather bemused by such commentry.

Then I discovered Dostoyevsky and Celine - Jackie Collins, Dennis Cooper, Lewis Carroll, Patrick White, Alain Fournier, Knut Hamsun, John Grisham and Jean Genet - to name a few! In my own writing I like to hop genres -DARKNESS GRIMOIRE: GOOD VS EVIL - BOOK 1 (YA fantasy/magic); THE SERIAL SHEARER (comic police procedural - written as M.A. Preston); MY BLACK WARDROBE (existential family crises - with comical slant - written as M.A. Preston); SKIN CUTTER: SERIAL KILLER ( dark horror-thriller - DARK!)

Slow burn - but I like novels set in Paris!

Michael Adams-Preston is starting The Holy Innocents: Finished book - as it is relatively small. My overall feeling is that I've visited the mid-section of the film Cabaret (without Liza M, of course, and without Berlin). I liked the detail and cinema references in Adair's novel. I like novels set in Paris, Caveat - a slow burn. Reminded me of those French movies I used to watch (before I was seduced by Friedkin and Lumet).
