Growing up in rural Nova Scotia, I was no stranger to boredom as a child.
One fateful summer day, when I was around ten years old and my friends were away camping with their families, I professed (read whined) to my mother that I was bored.
There was a massive bookcase in our living room, packed full of interesting titles I had glanced over for most of my childhood.
My mother escorted me to the bookcase and told me to pick something that I found interesting. This was daunting, and I said I didn't know where to start.
Perhaps unknowing of the profound effect it would have in my development, she pulled J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' off the shelf.
