Really good, but I think it is held back a little by being too clever and too tied to its concept. Don Rosa does an amazing job creating a narrative thread that incorporates the many hints that Carl Barks dropped about Scrooge's life. As with other ...more

On the whole quite good. The essays range from amazing to pretty good. There's a lot of experimenting with form here which for the most part works well. Even when it doesn't quite do more than just be an interesting experiment, well.. at least it is ...more

A series of interrelated, experimental short stories. The best stories in this collection (even though they are often bleak) make me excited about reading and living. There are several that are just alright and there are one or two things I thought ...more

Good overall take on Zen. Watts' outsider's perspective (historical and philosophical) is a good companion to the Janwillem van de Wetering's attempts to be an insider.

Starts off really well with an interesting premise - an antiquarian bookseller loses his personal memory but retains the memory of what he has read. The first section which deals with his initial recovery is quite good with all the ...more

Kyoto by John Dougill

A pre-travel primer offering a brief overview of Kyoto, Japanese history and culture. Perhaps too brief, unless you are getting ready to go there soon and want some background. Good, but I probably would have gotten more out of reading this if I read ...more

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

Pretty amazing. There's a whole lot packed in here: a portrait of a changing culture, a revolution of the left turned on its head, the 1984-like experience of the Iran/Iraq war, not to mention a compelling coming of age story.

Not quite as good as the first one. With the less dramatic historical context, it seemed a little episodic and meandering. Still pretty amazing, though.
