I grew up an army brat in the 1960s and 70s. I was a daddy's girl but it was an era when mothers did most of the day to day work of childrearing. My mom had largely been abandoned to her grandmother or boarding schools for much of her childhood but she studied the theories of the day and did her best.

I learned parenting from mom and those skills were not sufficient to meet the needs of my oldest son, Aaron. Our book walks through his first hand experiences as a child with ACES (adverse childhood experiences), learning disabilities, serious emotional disturbance and then mental illness; an adolescent survivor of Straight Inc (one of the original abusive TTI programs) and then of the streets; and finally an adult struggling with mental illne I grew up an army brat in the 1960s and 70s. The book layers my experiences as his mom with clear eyed insight into my faults and lessons learned, and finally it seeks to solutions to our lives to make those easier to understand. Pretty quickly after he was discharged from Straight, Aaron ended up on the streets. I sought to figure out better supports than we were able to access. I became an occupational therapist working as a mental health practitioner in a variety of settings ranging from acute psychiatric hospital to homeless shelters to community organizations and schools. I joined the family to family peer movement and pushed myself into emerging best practices around school mental health and more effective alternatives to residential treatment, from the National Wraparound Initiative to the National Community of Practice for School Behavioral Health. I advocated for the implementation of best practices with the Texas legislature and on a number of state and national policy groups.

I continued to learn everything I could, along the way earning a masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, and a PhD in Occupational Therapy. My dissertation research was about using student strengths to support successful transition from elementary to middle school. I developed an assessment tool and facilitated series of strength based groups for youth. My initial aim had been research, but given the slow uptake of research into practice, I shifted my focus to teaching effective mental health practices because I think the 500 or so developing therapists I have taught probably have a more immediate impact for children, youth, and adults with mental health needs than research was going to.

No Saints Here; A Cautionary Tale is a logical progression in my effort to increase the uptake of effective mental health practices. Aaron began his part about 10 years before his death and then I began both my narrative and the evidence practices after his death. I am concerned about the current deterioration of effective practices as their resources have been drained in recent years. This is truly a CAUTIONARY TALE in that our experience is what happens when we fail struggling children, families and adults. We know what to do but must have the will to assure that we make smart choices with public resources.
