When I go back, if the time is right, the wall is gone.
I guess if you write articles on deadline or have an assigned project you could get stuck and you need to finish the work. That's an advantage in fiction, you can write something different that isn't blocked. I write poetry and short stories when the novel isn't working.(less)

Even if a story falls apart, and they do, or you get inspired and start something else, keep your drafts. The novel I'm working on now started out as a short story, was abandoned for three years, then I came across it again. I read it, fell in love all over again, and now I'm thinking possible series! Even scraps or pieces of dialog can fit somewhere when the time is right. Trust your inspiration!(less)
