Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier

Lots of foul weather, bleak yet strangely lovely scenery, a whole range of bad guys, a spunky heroine:, and a hunky horse thief : What's not to love?

Yeah, du Maurier is a bit over the top at times, but the tale is gripping and I enjoyed the book.

This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Díaz

Although I recognized many of the stories from The New Yorker, I enjoyed listening to Díaz himself reading them.

However, I started to get a bit worn down by them. Over and over, men behave badly, and women end up leaving them or putting up with it,

The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui

Bui tells the story of Vietnam and of her family. I loved the graphic nvoel format, and how she frames her parents' story with her own experience of becoming a mother, and understanding that parents do the best they can do. But even without the frami ...more

Lucky Us by Amy Bloom

I was thoroughly entertained, and - ultimately - moved. Most of characters have a bit (or more) of the con in them, yet somehow the plot twists and turns, and the right connections are made.

This book is essential reading for these confusing times.

There are parts of the book that are excellent exposés - that is, good journalism. Becker's chapter on cruise ships, for example, is unforgettable, though I suspect many of my friends who have enjoyed cruises would jump to assert that she paints with ...more

Even This I Get to Experience by Norman Lear

Good car listen! Lear reads the book himself, which allows him to pronounce the occasional Yiddish words correctly and to use the emphasis and tone the author (he) intended. He also doesn't try to hide the occasional time that he becomes choked up, a ...more

The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett

For me, this is the kind of book that is simply just a pleasure to read. Patchett's fondness for the characters is infectious, and her decriptions of people and place drew me in. A good summer read!

I've read a number of Smith's books and most of them have totally loved. There are essays in this book that are also as thoughtful and funny and sad and sweet.

As I listened to the book on CD I don't know how many of these essays were previously publ

Dimestore by Lee Smith
"It's always a joy to get a glimpse inside a favorite author's life and thoughts. Lee Smith has been a writer that I follow, reading and loving her fiction for many years. This small book of essays takes us to Grundy, VA, a small coal mining mounta..." Read more of this review »

Bill Bryson
“A third...candidate for Shakespearean authorship was Christopher Marlowe. He was the right age (just two months older than Shakespeare), had the requisite talent, and would certainly have had ample leisure after 1593, assuming he wasn't too dead to work.”
