The book I read this summer is “The Call of the Wild.” It is a historical fiction book written by Jack London. This book is about a dog named Buck. Buck, a judge's dog, was happy to live with the judge, for he took care of him. Buck was half Saint Bernard and half Scotch Shepherd. He had muscles, thick hair and he was big. This is the kind of dog people wanted in 1897 to help find gold in Alaska. Manuel, a helper, sold Buck. Buck was put into a car and rode all the way up north, where he saw his owner and was mistreated. There he found his mates, where he was going to pull the owner's sled for the rest of his life. The other dogs did not respect each other and always fought with each other. After they stopped for the night, Buck was given food to eat. Buck did not eat, for his food was stolen by the other dogs. He learned the hard way to eat the food as fast as he could. When he tried to fight back to protect his food, he got hit by the owner. Buck learned how to kill a rabbit and how to be smarter instead of stronger and bigger. Buck was chasing a rabbit with Spitz, who was stronger and bigger than Buck. Buck was working smarter then Spitz, killed Spitz and was now the leader of the pack. Buck was respected and learned how to respect other dogs. Other dogs looked up to him for his kindness. Buck, who was the leader for a long time, was getting tired to the point that Buck stopped when the leader told him to go. Buck got hit by the club multiple times, for he was disobeying the order that he was given.
I did like this book because it was fast-paced but I did not like how people mistreated the dogs as I am a dog person. I felt sad reading it and seeing how the dogs where treated. I would recommend this book for people who like the outdoors and adventure but for me I will not recommend this book because the the dogs are force to work. I will recommend this book for 5th and up for it is short and fun. This is a good book to read for the hero overcam their fears and was in charge in the end. ...more "
