You have to develop the habit of writing and you have to know what good and bad writing sounds like, how it's structured, and how characters, settings, and plot are developed.

Second you have to find a good writing and critique partner. Your writing partner is usually someone who can keep you accountable and you can work out ideas with. They may or may not also be your critique partner. Critique partners can look at your work with a objective eye. You want someone who is both a reader and understands plot and character development. If you are fortunate enough to be able to hire a developmental editor, do your research and go for it. (less)

After a dream about a large Victorian house with a school attached. I came up with this well to do family, decided that because it was located in West Virginia that their money would come from owning coal mines and that the mother would be a headmistress of a private academy for girls. Abigail Morgan was her daughter.

Then I had a dream about a boy who fell down a flight of stairs and there were nuns running a school which became St. Catherine's orphanage. That developed my second character Matthew Mason.(less)

God of Jacob

One of my favorite lines of worship is to sing to the “God of Jacob”. It always puts me in my place before the Lord. Jacob was the second-born twin of Rebecca and Isaac. From the moment he was born, he wasn’t satisfied with being second. Even though he was his mother’s favorite, he wasn’t… Continue reading God of Jacob Read more of this blog post »

“Whenever people annoy me beyond reason, I can guarantee it’s because they’re demonstrating something I’d rather not see in myself.”

“I say no when I should say yes. I say yes when I should say no. I stumble into holy moments not realizing where I am until they are over. I love poorly, then accidently say the right thing at the right moment without even realizing it, then forget what matters, then show tenderness when it’s needed, and then turn around and think of myself way too often.”

“The truth of the gospel is intended to free us to love God and others with our whole heart. When we ignore this heart aspect of our faith and try to live out our religion solely as correct doctrine or ethics, our passion is crippled, or perverted, and the divorce of our soul from the heart purposes of God toward us is deepened. “Who am I really? The answer to that question is found in the answer to another. What is God's heart toward me, or, how do I affect him? If God is the Pursuer, the Ageless Romancer, the Lover, then there has to be a Beloved, one who is the Pursued. This is our role in the story.”
