Lorna Doone by R. D. Blackmore is a classic novel, built in the spirit of Romanticism - emotional, full of adventure and deeply connected to nature. The wild landscapes of Exmoor are not just a backdrop, but are both beautiful and deadly, a symbol of the freedom and danger that accompany the lives of the characters.

At the center of the narrative is the pure and passionate love between John Reed and Lorna Doone. For the modern reader, their love may seem too quick and easy, but in the historical context of the 17th century it is completely plausible. Young people then did not "go out on dates" in today's sense and were brought up to perceive marriage and commitment as a natural and desirable life path.

The story is led by the first person - John Reed himself, whose voice is often imbued with dry, almost unconscious humor. He is an extremely likeable character: honest to the point of naivety, combining simplicity with rustic cunning, slow to anger but fearsome when challenged. Although he underestimates his own intelligence, John is far more shrewd than he seems at first glance, and his small weaknesses make him all the more human.

The secondary characters are also vividly and vividly developed. Family and community relationships are presented with realism, including the painful lessons that life teaches even to good people. Blackmore manages to recreate the rhythm of rural life in the 17th century, the role of the Christian faith and the customs of a long-gone rural culture.

The novel's greatest flaw is the style. While the archaic language is generally not a hindrance, here it is highly wasteful, deviant and at times exhausting. The deliberately "Jacobin" tone, combined with a detailed reproduction of West English dialect, makes some passages difficult to understand. The pace is also slow, especially at the beginning, and given the book's size (over 600 pages), reading it can be a long ordeal. In places, the plot would benefit from tighter editing.

Some plot decisions are also questionable - for example, the motive for Lorna's hidden identity and her lack of memories of her childhood, which does not sound entirely convincing. Additionally, the novel bears the marks of its time in terms of gender roles - female characters are often presented as passive, prone to fits and emotional weakness, which today sounds irritating and outdated.

Despite these weaknesses, "Lorna Doone" remains a fascinating and affecting read. The rich world, strong atmosphere and sincere emotionality outweigh the shortcomings. The novel may not be perfect, but it definitely deserves the attention of readers who love classic literature, romantic stories and historical context. ...more
