“The rain fell alike upon the just and upon the unjust, and for nothing was there a why and a wherefore.”
William Somerset Maugham, Of Human Bondage

“I was very deliberate in my choice to not use italics for the Kannada, Urdu and Arabic words that remain untranslated in English. Italics serve to not only distract visually, but more importantly, they announce words as imported from another language, exoticising them and keeping them alien to English. By not italicising them, I hope the reader can come to these words without interference, and in the process of reading with the flow, perhaps even learn a new word or two in another language. Same goes for footnotes - there are none.

Against Italics: Translator's Notes”
Deepa Bhasthi, Heart Lamp: Selected Stories

Jhumpa Lahiri
“Books come to stand for various episodes in our lives, for certain idealisms, follies of belief, moments of love. Along the way they accumulate our marks, our stains, our innocent abuses—they come to wear our experience of them on their covers and bindings like wrinkles on our skin.”
Jhumpa Lahiri, The Clothing of Books: An Essay

Miranda July
“Not everyone has to be literate, there are some great reasons for resisting language, and one of them is love.”
Miranda July, No One Belongs Here More Than You

Isabel Allende
“We want a world of beauty, not only that which the senses appreciate, but also the beauty perceived by an open heart and a clear mind. We want a pristine planet protected from all forms of aggression. We want a balanced and sustainable civilization based on mutual respect, and respect for other species and for nature. We want an inclusive and egalitarian civilization free of gender, race, class, and age discrimination, and any other classification that separates us. We want the kind of world where peace, empathy, decency, truth, and compassion prevail. Above all, we want a joyful world. That is what we, the good witches, want. It’s not a fantasy, it’s a project. Together we can achieve it.”
Isabel Allende, The Soul of a Woman
