“The water looks really nice like this,” Allen says.
“Yeah,” you say, looking like you are looking at the water, or, at least, how you imagine you would look looking like you are looking at the water.
You look at the water and don’t say anything.
Then you peek, just for a second, to look at Allen.
Allen isn’t even looking at the water.
He’s crying about something.”
Mike Kleine, Mastodon Farm

“You are driving home.
You listen to ‘Tongue Tied’ by Grouplove.
Someone side-swipes the Ferrari.
You almost strike three pedestrians and crash into a Dunkin’ Donuts.
This is somewhere near the Brooklyn Bridge and you find out—later—the lady who hit you, she died.
She was old.
“Wasn’t wearing her glasses,” someone on the street says.
“She was basically driving blind,” the police officer says. “I’m surprised this didn’t happen earlier.”
An EMT examines you.
You try and act normal.
“Am I hurt?” you ask.
“You’re not hurt,” the EMT says.
You talk to the cops.
“Am I in trouble?” you ask.
“You’re not in trouble,” a young cop says.
You freak out a little.
You can smell pomade in your sweat.
“Everything is under control,” someone says—another police officer.
You freak out some more.”
Mike Kleine, Mastodon Farm

“Writing a novel— actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs— is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV’s so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it’s damn near impossible. That should be taken into account when ranking the all-time greats. Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit.”
Steve Hely, How I Became a Famous Novelist

“I owned a Ferrari, a Range Rover, a Mercedes 560SL convertible, a Jeep Cherokee and a Nissan 300ZX. I can't remember the intricate decision tree I had to climb in order to determine which one to drive to work on any given day - it probably had something to do with the weather, or which car had more gas in the tank, or upholstery that best matched whatever shirt I happened to throw on that morning.”
Michael J. Fox, Lucky Man

“My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best.”
Winston S. Churchill

“And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

In the Desert

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;

“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”
Stephen Crane, The Black Riders and Other Lines

Oh that. Yes, somebody did really say that to me in real life, once.

Then you also have the other side of the coin. People who ask you if you read and if you reply "no," then they decide you're not cultured (enough.)

Toby your answer to my security question, somebody really told you that reading was a waste of time? i honestly thought that was some kind of tv/movie cliche.
