I had read Wise Blood twice before and couldn't decipher it. I found it fascinating but needed a Rosetta Stone to give it meaning. Dr. Chace's Stanford CSP class did that and now I appreciate the story more. Look for transcendent grace, even in the m ...more

Light in August deals with so many large themes it's hard to imagine how they can be contained in one book - racism, loneliness, societal expectations, Southern history, alienation ... It is a stunning book. I found it comforting how the book both st ...more

The Shadow of the Sun by Ryszard Kapuściński
Rate this book
Clear rating
An amazing book. Ryszard's writing it so clear and unsentimental. His observations on Africa, and the West's perennial misunderstanding of other cultures are just as relevant today as they were 50 years ago. Highly, highly recommended.
