In the course of writing it, I've had to read up on a few interesting topics: pre-canal Panamanian geography, Hawaiian naming laws in the early 20th century, and zeppelin timetables (which are highly complicated things).(less)

The genesis of 'The Star-Studded Black', the followup to my debut novella, is in the American Civil War. Really.

In the 1860s, river travel was the single best way to get large volumes of stuff around the interior of the United States, especially the South. As such, control of the rivers was strategically important, and a particular sort of vessel emerged almost by accident as king of the inland waterway. The War Department provided the funding, but the design and construction happened outside the Navy's direct purview.

That got me thinking: what's the analogue in space? What sort of terrain corresponds to a river, and what sort of ship is like a riverboat? How would someone militarize it, and why?

The answers to these questions are, I feel, very interesting. Stay tuned for more news about the novella as it gets closer to release.(less)

Now, though, the time has come, as have 1.0.0-beta2 releases, with the promised changelogs. (Hit the RPJ link in the menu bar for
