Lydia Coral Willcock is a South African homeschool grad passionate about writing accurate and realistic historical fiction set in or centred around her own country. She is also an avid reader and strongly believes the two go together. Never happier than with a book in her hand or a WIP in her head, she also loves studying history, playing the piano, and knitting favourite literary characters.

If it's a series, I'll read favourite sections from other books in that series too. Most often, that ends up giving me inspiration to go on. Something that very often helps is deleting the last paragraph written, or the last unfinished scene, and trying an entirely different direction.
If that isn't helping, I'll try things like listening to the WIP's playlist or looking at the Pinterest storyboard. Then, I'll go back to the things that gave me inspiration for the story in the first place. And if I have to, I'll take a step back from writing while I do that. Sometimes that means working on another WIP for a while, sometimes it means taking a break from writing completely for a couple weeks and just focusing on reading favourite books or research books or some other books that will give me inspiration in some form. Something else I sometimes try is writing a flash fiction or short short story about the characters set before or after the actual story, or from a different POV, even if I know no one will never read it except me.
Eventually, inspiration comes back, even if it takes a few weeks. The most important thing is to remind yourself what had you excited about the story in the first place and try put yourself back there! (less)

Looking Back: 10 Years of Writing

We're almost at the end of 2025! This year has been a big writing year in some ways, and one of the things that makes it special is that it marks ten years of serious writing for me.  Writing was always a small part of me, almost as long as I knew how to read. At 4, with some handwriting help from my mom, I wrote and co-illustrated a story for my sister - The Mystery of Read more of this blog post »
