aka K.D. Hays.

After coming east from Chicago to attend college at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, Kate Dolan grew attached to the region and never moved back. She holds an interdisciplinary degree in English, history and drama and a law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law, and has written professionally for over ten years in a variety of fields. Currently living in a suburb of Baltimore, she is ideally positioned to drag her husband and two children to visit an endless array of historical sites. She also volunteers as a living historian in order to teach and learn more about everyday life in early America.

Then they went out of business so all the rights went back to the authors. I put my story out in print on my own and now that I have the rights to all of them I will put my four Christmas stories in one print book this fall. But I don't know what the other authors have planned and it still doesn't give you all the ghost stories in one book unfortunately.(less)

It's historical, but not in the same way as my other books because it takes place in the 1980s rather than the 1780s. It's about a group of dysfunctional college students thrown together in a rooming house run by a very strange "house master," who goes missing. The characters are made up of bits and pieces of my friends from college, with the exception of the narrator, who is mostly me. Sad to say, the dysfunctional part is pretty autobiographical.(less)

Weird Industries from the Past: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt

We all know that the Egyptians mummified their kings and invested quite a bit of money and time in the process. What I didn’t know, until I saw an exhibit at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore recently, is that the Egyptians also mummified millions of animals with equally elaborate treatment. The sale of animal […]

“Impossible as it seemed, many of these older ladies, who never stirred from the house past sunset, had either not heard the tales of his behavior two nights ago or had not believed them.
The ones who did obviously has enough manners, or at least enough sense, to keep quiet in the presence of his mother. Had anyone said anything outright, his mother would probably have no qualms about asking the offender to choose a weapon and name her second.”

“He collapsed into a chair bedecked with cushions. "Pillows love me," he sighed.”
Kate Dolan, A Certain Want of Reason

“Edmund dashed over to the nearest window. "I'll jump off this ship!" he announced. But the window wouldn't open without more of a struggle than he had time to offer. So he made his exit through the more convenient, albeit less dramatic, doorway with Adrington and Mountdale in close pursuit.”
