"Reading this in preparation for going to Catalonia. I'm one chapter in and I like it already. So far it's told from the perspective of the gods who make the weather. Fantastic." — Aug 03, 2026 08:42AM

"I saw at least one of the reviews say that this wasn't as funny as her other books, but this book is hilarious. I heard her on Wait wait Don't tell me the other day and she was very entertaining. The first chapter was all about false teeth and I had to read most of it to Stu because it was so delightfully funny, not to mention true, which is the best kind of funny." — Aug 03, 2026 08:44AM

“they told me of color, that it was an illusion of the eye, an event in the perceiver’s mind, not in the object; they told me that color had no reality; indeed, they told me that color did not inhere in a physical body any more than pain was in a needle. And then they imprisoned me in darkness; and though there was no color there, I still was black, and they still were white; and for that, they bound and gagged me.”

“I know that societies often have killed people who have helped to change those societies. And if I can die having brought any light, having exposed any meaningful truth that will help destroy the racist cancer that is malignant in the body of America then, all of the credit is due to Allah. Only the mistakes have been mine.”

“I believed, and still do, that our bodies are our selves, that my soul is the voltage conducted through neurons and nerves, and that my spirit is my flesh.”

“We Americans claim to be a peace-loving people. We hate bloodshed; we are opposed to violence. Yet we go into spasms of joy over the possibility of projecting dynamite bombs from flying machines upon helpless citizens. We are ready to hang, electrocute, or lynch anyone, who, from economic necessity, will risk his own life in the attempt upon that of some industrial magnate. Yet our hearts swell with pride at the thought that America is becoming the most powerful nation on earth, and that she will eventually plant her iron foot on the necks of all other nations.
Such is the logic of patriotism.”
