“धर्म समाज द्वारा निर्मित है। धर्म के नीतिशास्त्र को जन्म नहीं दिया है, वरन् इसके विपरीत नीतिशास्त्र ने धर्म को जन्म दिया है। समाज को जीवित रखने के लिए समाज द्वारा निर्धारित नियमों की ही नीतिशास्त्र कहते हैं, और इस नीतिशास्त्र का आधार तक है। धर्म का आधार विश्वास है और विश्वास के बन्धन से प्रत्येक मनुष्य को बाँधकर उससे अपने नियमों का पालन कराना ही समाज के लिए हितकर है। इसीलिए ऐसी भी परिस्थितियाँ आ सकती हैं, जब धर्म के विरुद्ध चलना समाज के लिए कल्याणकारक हो जाता है और धीरे-धीरे धर्म का रूप बदल जाता है।”
