His parents are killed and he's given off to his Aunt and Uncle Dursley has a very young child, his Aunt and Uncle did not want him to find out what his parents were so they kept locked away in a sense for most of his life. His cousin Dudley was spoiled by his parents a lot, they referred to it all the time to show how bad Harry's life was. Harry never had a birthday and always had to do all the chores around the house and everything he didn't want to do. Then one day a letter showed up at the door written for Harry, he was shocked because he had never gotten a letter his entire life, this also happened on his birthday. It was a letter from Hogwarts inviting him to go to the school, Hogwarts is a place for wizards and spells and all sorts of things like that. His Aunt and Uncle took the letter from him immediately since they didn't want him to find out who he really was, but somehow letters just kept showing up, like tons of letters. There got to be so many letters that they left and went to a deserted island where no one could get to. So eventually, a guy named Hagrid from Hogwarts came to that island and hand-delivered the letter and he was very ashamed of how Harry's Aunt and Uncle treated him his whole life. Hagrid was shocked that he had no idea who he was. I will leave it there because that's a good place to stop. Three things I liked about the story were, I really liked how Harry was developed throughout the story because he had no idea what was going on and all a sudden got thrown into this whole ordeal. Secondly, I liked the idea of the book with the whole wizards and spells thing, it was very appealing since it's not something in our everyday lives. Third, it took me to a whole new universe, it was so much different than any other book, it did a really good job of painting a picture of what was going on at all times. I found it really easy to understand what was happening. One thing I didn't like so much was how much they talked about Dudley and how spoiled he was, it was okay at first because it got me to understand why Harry hated him and his life so much but eventually it got very annoying and redundant. The quote I chose was from page 306, "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends." I really liked this quote because it can mean a number of things, but I just liked how true it was because you'd think it'd be easy to stand up to friends since you know them well but it's not that easy because you don't know how they'll react. I also liked the quote from page 214, "It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that." I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read, it's overall very fun to dive into this whole world with crazy spells and different ways of living.
