Manny Thank you Ted! It's starting to feel like the Goodreads equivalent of appearing in the TLS...

Antonomasia Don't try to refute it. Instead, go one better
@Samadrita, Manny. I found something similar: when you get to the point of looking at it in serious detail, near-infinite numbers of variables are introduced eg fixed stars -especially fixed stars because there are so many and astrologers pay attention to different ones - exact degrees of placement, multiple different house systems which can produce different results, it becomes evident that it can be made to say pretty much anything you want it to. When it's one-to-one stuff, cold reading too.
Also, sometimes people need to want to quit, as with an addiction, as the beliefs serve a purpose for them.

As I just said in my Sladek review, the best argument I have ever seen against astrology is presented in Arachne Rising . Don't try to refute it. Instead, go one better and see what happens.

Nandakishore Mridula Manny, your reputation as a Good Wizard is getting firmly established. ;)

See here.

Well... I've reviewed the majority of the books I've read, so hopefully I can remember something about them...

Grant Greer Hello Manny, I noticed that you have read over 1900 books. I absolutely love reading but have not completed nearly as many books as you have. I am wondering if after having read so many books whether you can recall information from most of them? The thought of having a large repository of information gleaned from hundreds of science books is really exciting.

Manny This just in. People curious about the deleted reviews can find them on my BookLikes page.

I am particularly interested to see that my review of Moving for Dummies was flagged as "potentially off-topic". Nearly a hundred people had voted for it when it was taken down, and I'd received numerous comments saying that it was rather useful.

Manny Indeed, it can get quite philosophical at times. The interesting thing is that the topic which gets censored most often is precisely censorship :)

message 196: by Neha

Neha Gupta Manny, Quiet a burning discussion you are having... brings me back to the question of what are the parameters of censorship.. and "How to write a book review?... naked truth or diplomatic truth .. or just forget it..

Manny Thank you Elham!

message 194: by Manny

Manny Thank you Rabbit!

Samandrita, you are of course very welcome to repost Hydra or any of my other reviews. In general, anyone who wants to do this has my explicit permission.

Samadrita Manny, I am reposting your Hydra review as well. This is to formally take your permission which I am guessing you will be giving me anyway.

Manny Check out Ceridwen's brilliant piece, By the Numbers: An Analysis of the Reviews Deleted in the Goodreads Policy Change . Next time I need an example to show people how the internet can be used to fight arbitrary abuse of power, this is what I'll quote.
