Eight hundred years ago, the group known as "The Eight Warlords" protected the world from the forces of evil and kept balance into the world. Led by the shinigami himself, Death, all was well. Until his own apprentice betrayed him and the group by becoming a Kishin, infecting the world with his madness. He put a stop to his insanity. The shinigami then founded Death Weapon Meister Academy, also known as "Shibusen", in which their goal was to prevent another uprise of a Kishin.
