Been looking for years. I am pretty sure I read this in about 1988. I think maybe the protagonists were two teen boys. They went into a scientist's house or something and found the cubes or wafers which were numbered. I think when they squeezed it they could travel into someone's mind, which was like going into a house. There was one mind they went into of a cruel person whose inner self was a stunted or frightened child in a dark room.

Tyler, did you figure this one out? I've been looking for this book for years, too. I remember the main character had a pet dog, and the professor's breath smelled like sweet grass. Let me know if you found it or if you think we're even talking about the same book. Also, I don't think it was The Infinity Box.
