Diane S ☔ So imaginative. I can imagine how thrilled his children were.

penneminreads I finished Station Eleven yesterday and loved it so much! I'm currently reading Bossypants by Tina Fey which is very funny so far :)

Katherine (madlibn) | 11 comments Reading Speaks the Nightbird by Robert McCammon. The book involves a traveling magistrate and his clerk who are called to Fount Royal to pass judgement on an accused witch. It seems to be southern gothic from a fairly well-known horror author. Although I have not finished it, I do recommend it.

I have ordered this. Says it will arrive here before Christmas. I hope so.

penneminreads Just finished a book about forensics (very, very easy read though) and just started reading Craig Lancaster's 600 Hours of Edward. I'm only a few chapters in but it seems like that will be a good story.

I finished Landfall this morning. Although I struggled with it in places I enjoyed it overall and was very impressed with Ellen Urbani's description of events in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. I encourage all Trail members to read it and post your comments and questions you may have for Ellen in the book's discussion thread. My review is here.

Angela M Goodreads member Fionnuala came up with this great idea to summarize our reading for the year . I've enjoyed reading those that have been posted so far . Here's mine : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Ann Sumner Just finished A Feast of Snakes and if I ever have to read anything as odious and irredemptive as this novel again I will not be responsible for my actions. I loathed every page, every character and every sentence of this novel.

However, I have also finished the lightweight and satisfying Death Comes to Pemberly and will bask in its sweetness for days to come. Holding Patti Smith's new memoir for my holiday next week, as well as Gloria Steinam's.

So aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the show?

Connie G (connie_g) | 655 comments I just finished Weed the People: The Future of Legal Marijuana in America by Bruce Barcott.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Some of the Trail members that read Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption might find this book interesting too. It has a heartbreaking section on racial profiling and long prison terms in Louisiana for possession of small amount of marijuana.

I just finished an ARC of Ruta Sepetys' next book, Salt to the Sea. While not quite as good as Between Shades of Gray, it is still an impressive work about another great catastrophe. My review is here.

penneminreads I'm currently reading Tom Holt's The Portable Door. I'm still sort of at the beginning, but magical things are happening, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this story will go.

Also, I've got 8 days left to finish my reading challenge, so I'm really looking forward to having a couple of days off at Christmas :) I'm probably gonna spend most of my time reading.

I've been hacked! A GR friend applied a little bit of ingenuity and tracked down my LibraryThing profile with the result that today I received in the mail a copy of The Long Ships, a book that I had placed on that wishlist and no other.

Thanks GR Santa.

At one minute past midnight Mountain Time, Craig Johnson, author of my favorite western mystery series, Longmire, sent out his annual Christmas story. I haven't read it yet but I've never been disappointed by this wonderful author's Christmas gift. I am therefore passing it on to you, my new friends along with my most sincere wishes for a happy holiday and a wonderful new year.
Land of the Blind.

Having read all of Cormac McCarthy's later books but none of his earlier books, I've decided to start at the beginning and read his first four books in order, starting with The Orchard Keeper, my first moderator's choice. I invite anyone who is interested in reading more of this outstanding American author to join me in January.

PS: Santa was good to me this year. My copy appeared under the tree this morning.

Initially, I bought the audio and it is very good but I ended up buying the print version as well because this is an example of how the written word wins over the spoken word -well for me anyway.

Tom, love your books there

penneminreads I'm reading Daniel Woodrell's novel Winter's Bone and enjoying it a lot so far.

penneminreads LeAnne, I was wondering whether I remembered correctly about the movie! I'm going to give it a shot after I finish reading the book :)

What a great Christmas Gift haul, Tom. GRIN. I can hardly wait for your review of [book:The Night of the Hunter
. I enjoy Davis Grubb and highly recommend Fools' Parade, too.

The Orchard Keeper is an excellent pick on your Moderator's Choice. Looking forward to re-reading that one!

I finished The Stranger by Albert Camus on Christmas night. Not your typical Christmas reading by a long shot. But a well deserved read.

I see he also brought you The Night Of The Hunter, which is nice of him. I too have acquired a copy and look forward to reading it. If it is half as good as the film, it should be worthwhile. Sorry about the bottle of Baileys, though. Not everything Santa brings is a treat, Hope you weren't too ill...

Kim Kaso | 602 comments The blessings of being an English Literature & Writing major and lecturer in my younger years, I cut huge swathes of reading of many authors early on, when I was more resilient mood-wise. My second major was Speech and Drama, and I did a history minor. Always buried in a book or a play, but this year, in particular, while recovering from a heart attack in January and a badly broken leg in June which has caused me to be bed- & house-bound much of 2015, I am finding I have to ration the darker books.
