Regan | 138 comments A rep from Tantor popped into the thread on the Moby Dick giveaway, and said they'd do more free stuff soon. After a little back and forth about things we might be interested in, they've put up The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes for us!

Thanks again Tantor!

message 8: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments I live in Belgium. Again this offer did not work for me. :0(

Is it correct that TANTOR is only available for those who live across the ocean? Is it correct that I should never even bother checking them out? What can they offer to me if I live in Europe and don't want to play around with foreign addresses and credit cards? I just want to follow the rules. If I am forced to play with the rules I would rather buy from Audible, where such is not necessary. There are so many audiobooks on my wishlist that I don't have the time to listen to them anyhow.

Should I ignore Tantor, since I live in Europe?

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Chrissie, I'm not seeing an easy answer on their site, so you might try service@tantor.com

message 10: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments Osho, I will do that immediately. Thanks for the link!

message 11: by Sandi (new) - added it

Sandi (sandikal) | 420 comments I see it includes the ebook as well as the audio.

Regan | 138 comments Sandi wrote: "I see it includes the ebook as well as the audio."

Yes, it's labeled that way, but my download files didn't actually include the PDF. I sent customer service an email to flag it for them, but this is in the public domain so there are plenty of free ebook sources for this. Several at Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/834

message 13: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments Osho, Tantor never even bothered to answer. I guess that means this place is not available to those of us living in Europe. You'd think they would bother to answer.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

That's too bad.

I am happy with Audible.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I've found Audible customer service very responsive.

I'm sorry but, Tantor was nice enough to come give us a heads up about a free audiobook that it didn't have to give to us. I am sorry that this offer may be only available in the US but come on that happens alot doesn't it? There is no need to be so rude to a company that was nice enough to give us free audiobooks.

message 19: by Chrissie (last edited Aug 17, 2012 11:39AM) (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments MissSusie, I never said that wasn't nice, but I do think they should answer inquiries sent to their indicated service department.

oh I see I thought you meant on this thread, I've always had great service from them so am a little surprised they haven't responded sorry for the snarkiness.

It is easy to misunderstand each other. Don't worry about it. :0) I am very happy they offer this to some.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I sent them a message on a different topic that they haven't replied to as well.

message 23: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments Osho, that must mean that a lack of response doesn't necessarily mean Europeans cannot use Tantor..... Maybe eventually they will answer us?

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I have no idea, but I'd assume they'll respond.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Chrissie, popping in to say that Tantor got back to me today (on a technical matter), so maybe they'll reply to you.

message 26: by Chrissie (last edited Aug 20, 2012 07:42AM) (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments YAY, I got an answer from Tantor.

Unfortunately, "Many of our titles we have only North American audio rights for, we can legally only sell them within this area, of course when we can acquire World rights for a title we certainly do."

I thought others might want to know this too.

Well I would like to listen to Pride Prejudice & Zombies but want to listen to Pride & Prejudice as a refresher to the story so my vote would be for Pride and Prejudice by, Jane Austen

My vote would be for Mary Roberts Rinehart - The Bat.

For another classic, I'd suggest Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell or King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard. For something more contemporary, perhaps the non-fiction title The Man Who Loved Books Too Much or a mystery from Thomas Perry, maybe Vanishing Act.

message 31: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 1529 comments I would like something that even Europeans can download.

message 32: by Regan (new) - added it

Regan | 138 comments Ooh, I second Cranford! I love Elizabeth Gaskell.

Alan (alanmintaka) | 207 comments Tantor wrote: "Hi, we appreciate the input and your patience! Any ideas for a giveaway in Sept?"

How about some of the lesser known titles by H. G. Wells, such as When The Sleeper Wakes or non-Science Fiction/Fantasy titles such as Mr. Britling Sees it Through and Kipps?

I have no idea if these titles are available in audiobook format, are in the public domain, or are licensed by you for publication. They came to mind because I was thinking about the European folks who can't access your giveaways. I thought that perhaps books by European authors might be more accessible to the international audience.

Thanks also for the Sherlock Holmes freebie!

Alan Mintaka

Ooohhhhh . . . I vote for the THE RAINBOW . . as I've never read it . . and the person who is narrating it is someone I just discovered . . Wanda McCaddon . . who has done such a great job on some of the other books I've recently acquired.

Still 9/16 here on the west coast (east coast for that matter), but no longer free. Guess I shouldn't have waited until the last day :(
