The Fault in Our Stars
question
How would you explain some quotes from the book?

Since english is not my first language i have some trouble with explaining to my self what these two quotes really mean:
-i'm on a roller coaster that only goes up
&
-My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations
Would anyone be kind enough to try and explain?

It's been some time since I read this book and, though I do remember finding these lines interesting, I don't remember their context.
On a roller coaster, the ride up tends to be very tense and suspenseful because the riders know that the big drop is coming up. Maybe this line is about anticipation or anticlimax.
I agree with the previous post that the stars to constellations line seems to be about disorganized ideas. Someone else does a good job of explaining why here: http://loveandimpermanence.tumblr.com...

"My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations."
It means that Augustus had the ideas but not the organization required to become an author. But actually, from his last letter, he seemed to be an incredible writer. I wish John Green didn't make him write those awesome words.

The other quote in a way is metaphor. They don't litterally mean stars and constellations. Stars are seperate. While constellation are grouped together. The stars in a way were repenting his thoughts. While the constellation represent the story he was writing. basically he was trying to say that he has great tjoughts but can't put together the ideas in the way peter did it
i'm on a roller coaster that only goes up-I think this means that he's really really happy and there's nothing that can bring him down.
See this link
My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations-Maybe here's implying over here that his thoughts are scattered and he cannot make sense of them,
Hope this helps! :)

I'm on a roller coaster... I took to mean that since he is sick and dying he'll never get to finish his ride. He'll never get to all the good parts only the beginning part which sets up the momentum for the rest of the ride. Or in other words, the more interesting, fun, exciting parts of life happen after childhood.
The constellation allusion is just her thoughts are so disjointed she can't see how they all fit together and make sense in the grand scheme of things. If she could just fit them all together in a logical way, she'll understand and have real insight into everything that is happening.

Alot of thoughts that dont fit together.
So the person is thinking a lot but the thoughts dont form together to make any conclusions.

I thought in a way when he said I'm only on a roller coaster that goes up. I took as if he was trying to positive. In general if u hear the word up in a sentence like she feels like there only one direction and that up. That in a way means that he is positive. But I also feel when u go up a roller coaster u get nervous and anxious so I think in a way his quote was changing over time and at first it was used to show he has happy and positive and then him being scared if cancer.
This is obviously very late in response, but I thought I would pitch in, as no one seems to have got the rollercoaster reference. I just read this book recently, literally a month before the movie came out, and these were two of my favourite lines due to the metaphors.
"I'm on a rollercoaster that only goes up, my friend" refers to Gus's positive attitude and general perspective upon life. It's a reference to the phrase "Life is a rollercoaster", which compares the ups and downs of life's best and worst moments, and how a person's outlook constant changes depending on what they're facing at the time. In this quote, Augustus is saying that he only sees the positive. He's having a great life despite all the struggles he's been through. I love that outlook, I think it's such a great way to view everything. He's only focusing on the positives in his life rather than the negatives.
"My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations" refers to the fact that Augustus has so many things he wants to say, so many things he wants to share with the world, with others, but he can't put them into words. He can't make use of the brilliance running through his brain as he can't actually find a way to express them. I also thought it could be referring to when you have so many thoughts running through your head, all as important as the other, so fast that you actually can't process what you're thinking, what you want to say, and put them into a form of expression easy to understand by others who can't share all the thoughts that you are having at a million miles a second.
Hope this helped to clear these quotes up for you :)

The roller coaster line is a little odd, to me. The point of a roller coaster is to dip and twist and turn. The 'up' motion is normally only the beginning of the ride, when you're beginning to anticipate the speed of the ride. Therefore, isn't Augustus actually saying he's waiting and anticipating something he can't predict? Which is an unusual way of responding to a generic 'how are you?' It sounds like he expected the cancer to come back, or else he's spending his entire life on a pause.
I think that it is disappointing one because the real enjoy in going down
