This could be dangerous.

Mary Jason wrote: "This could be dangerous."

There's a tray of tequila, salt and limes in here as a precaution.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 147 comments I'll take a prophylactic shot of that, thank you.

Mary Take two! No one has shown up to this party yet.

Moira (the_red_shoes) | 123 comments Hunh, maybe Stephen M and I could move transfer of our more book-specific posts over here. Except we've both read it -- I forget, is there going to be a spoiler/non spoiler post division? I'd really hate to ruin some aspects of the book for new readers. (I think the Proust group set up spoiler/nonspoiler, I'll have to check. Of course there are always the spoiler tags....)

And then you also want some "burnt urn-bottom coffee" (God, what a phrase) with heaps of sugar and Oreos and stale supermarket doughnuts for the Friends of Bill, ahahahaha. Newly sober people run on four fuels: sugar, coffee, nicotine, and elemental terror.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 147 comments Congratulations on your sobriety, Moira.

Aww thanks dear! Ten years so far. (And, lessee, about four and a half months - those little computer count-up clocks that tell you your sober time down to the tenth of a second kind of scare me.)

I just created a spoiler discussion thread. This will all get easier once we start reading and have location-specific threads posted, but since that's a long way off, I think a spoiler thread is a good way to go. We can all catch up with all those discussions once the rest of us have finished IJ.

Steaming pots of coffee and fresh doughnuts comin' right up! (congrats on your sobriety!)

Aww thanks....I feel a little funny bringing it up, because it sort of feels like bragging. But heck, I guess in discussing this book it's a bit on-topic....

Richard I just got my copy today! I'm very excited about that. I'm going to treat myself to a doughnut (a real one, not a virtual one).

Hooray Richard! I love that feeling when you bring home a much anticipated book. :)

Yes, and then it turns into the "Where can I hide it so my mom doesn't find out I've been spending more money on books?" feeling.

Marieke | 64 comments mmmm doooonnuuuuuts

i just, um, set some new books aside without saying anything about them coming in the mail...hahaha...

Richard @ Mary: Thank you for the reminder (I haven't had mine yet)!

@ Marieke: Your jest is infinitely amusing, a) because I'm a Simpsons fan, and b) because my gastronomic rapacity knows no satiety.

message 20: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 64 comments oh goody! because otherwise my post is completely off-topic. especially since the books i hid belong to the Proust project, not IJ. :/

Aloha Oh, the donuts are divine! Here is my effort to pop into the IJ threads before it goes up to over 100 count.

Carly (carlyguy820) Congrats, Moira! I'm glad you decided to "brag." It makes me feel less alone. I have 6 years and 2 months of sobriety under my belt.

As for IJ, I'm kind of anxious about this undertaking but I keep telling myself that, since I was able to finish the entire bible in a year, I can pretty much finish anything. I enjoyed basically none of it.

I would recommend this to anyone with that much sobriety. Lots of insight into recovery, and also some humorous passages.

As for comparing it with the bible, it is definitely not the bible, but it will stay with you like the bible does in some ways...

message 24: by Luke (new) - rated it 5 stars

Luke (korrick) I put two copies of IJ on hold at my library yesterday with hopes that I could get one in January. One of them became available today.
I wish that the universe hadn't conspired in my favor so quickly. Having to carry around my recently checked out Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell as well as this is going to wreak havoc on my spine.

Rayroy (lomaxlespark) | 16 comments I wasn't all that much into the Notes and Errata section in back of the book until I got to # 24. James O. Icandenza: A Filmography. a few of my favorites
"Dark Logics"
"Widower"
"Cage 2"
"Death In Scarsdale", Scarsdale is a name of a rich town in Upstate New York,In Thomas Pynchon's "Against The Day" there's a villian named Scarsdale Vibe, a railroad tycoon, who's name refers the town. I wonder if David Foster Wallace was referring to the town as well.
"Homo Duplex"
"The American Century as Seen Through a Brick"

Sunny (travellingsunny) I loved the end notes - especially when they were snarky. Like the one "you don't want to know." That's all he gave us. Hysterical! LOL!

I haven't come across that one yet, but that is pretty awesome.

Gary the Bookworm (garmct) | 20 comments That really was funny. I find myself laughing out loud. The description of The AA Meeting had me rolling...especially the testimony about having a solid turd. Okay, I still laugh at bathroom jokes.
