She's 81. Her website doesn't really seem to have been updated; it's promoting her newest book as "just released" - Fadeaway Girl, from last year. Which is a little worrying when her bio notes that she has released a book, sometimes two, every year for the past 25 years. A quick search doesn't turn up anything else...

I think I'll start the whole series over. I miss everyone. Her books were like visiting old friends. Now, is Elizabeth George ever going to let us know how Tommy Lindley is faring, and Simon, and Deborah, and Barbara?

Penny | 353 comments am reading Now You See Me (Lacey Flint, #1) by S.J. Bolton which is good so far - a copycat of Jack the ripper or is it?!!

I wanted to go straight on to the next Gamache but this one is due back to the library first so am racing through in order to get back to Gamache.

Sandi, I remember when I read this book a long time ago. It was a magical experience, just as you described. Wallace Stegner is a gifted author, one of the very few authors I would read again!

message 356: by Judy (new)

Judy I just finished reading The Red House Mystery, this month's discussion book. Up next are the last two books in Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries series & hopefully soon my library reserve of the latest book in Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks' series.

message 357: by Tom (new)

Tom | 53 comments I recently finished, In the Blood,by Steve Robinson. It is set in Cornwall. This was very good as a mystery and good genealogy, too. As an avid genealogist, I am always looking for genealogical mysteries. Dan Waddle is my favorite, but I do like Robinson, too. There were plenty of clues, and it was exciting to read. The biggest fault, and the reason I gave it four rather than five stars, was the terrible accent he gave Jefferson. It was a stereotypical American accent that would not be used by someone with the background and education Jefferson has. With that said, I will read the next

message 358: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) I'm about 3/4 through Piece Of My Heart by Peter Robinson, the 16th Alan Banks mystery. This one jumps from a murder in 1969 to a murder in 2005, being investigated by different detectives, but with similarities. I really enjoy this series, but am getting close to the end.

message 359: by Janie (new)

Janie (justjanie) | 1 comments I'm Janie and I'm new here and fairly new to the genre.

I just finished the first Maisie Dobbs and I really liked it. :-) I hope to continue the series after I get a few heavier reads out of the way.

message 360: by Betty (new)

Betty (betty30554) Just finished A Place of Hiding (Inspector Lynley, #12) by Elizabeth George and reviewed it. I give it 5 stars.

message 361: by HJ (new)

HJ | 223 comments I've just seen a bargain for anyone who likes both mysteries and historical novels. These are Regency and quite good fun, and you get the first three in the series plus a couple of short stories. As I've bought them all individually I can't take advantage of the deal myself! Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries Volume One. They're by Ashley Gardner who also writes as Jennifer Ashley.

I am ashamed to admit that I live right here in Québec (Montréal) & have not read any of these .... they shall go on my to-read list ;>) At the moment I am still in Richard III mode - reading Lancaster & York (Alison Weir), We Speak No Treason #1 (Jarman) as well as (non Richard) Kate Atkinson's Case Histories with Beckett's Chemistry of Death next. I recently read Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Library by Robin Sloan & enjoyed it a lot.

I have The Chemistry of Death (David Hunter, #1) by Simon Beckett on the shelf waiting. I finished Now You See Me (Lacey Flint, #1) by S.J. Bolton which was very good and I shall look forward to more from Ms Bolton. But now of course I am totally immersed in a Canadian Gilbertine monastery with Gamache and Beauvoir in The Beautiful Mystery (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #8) by Louise Penny . I dont want these books to end!!
Helen I too have read lots on the Wars of the Roses and Rich III - am waiting to hear if that DNA sample they took from the skeleton is him!! Have got also into books on the Norman conquest and William and his children.

Leslie | 1664 comments I would like to request that people include at least the title of a book in addition to the picture of the cover. I use the mobile app quite a bit and the covers don't show up.

Even on a computer the covers don't show clearly enough in thumbnail size (unless they've been carefully designed), so one can't usually see the title and author. So I second the request to use titles, please!

I can certainly add titles, if I remember them, but the picture deal is beyond my ability. Where do you get the pictures and how to you import them to these posts? I see that a lot and can't figure out how it is done?

message 367: by Frances (new)

Frances (francesab) I find if I hover over the picture the title and author appear-I guess that won't work on your mobile app though

Leslie | 1664 comments @Kathy -- you can add a picture of the book cover by using the "add book/author" button at the top of the comment box where you type your text - instead of adding a title go to the bottom of the search box and click on "add cover" instead of the default "add title".

Cheryl S. | 40 comments Just finished Tana French's Faithful Place (Dublin Murder Squad, #3) by Tana French "Faithful Place". Didn't like it quite as much as "The Likeness" but it was still very good.

Now I'm trying my first Kate Atkinson, Case Histories (Jackson Brodie, #1) by Kate Atkinson "Case Histories". Took me a bit to get interested but am liking it better now that I am about 1/2 way done.

I just finished what I thought would be my first Louise Penny and Gamache. Knew right away I had read it before, but enjoyed it and plan to continue. I have no idea if I've read any others. I started keeping a log of books I read a few years ago to solve this problem.

Thank goodness. I thought I was the only nerd who needed a log to keep track of what I read. It helps.

Leslie | 1664 comments Just finished Still Life With Murder by P.B. Ryan -- historical fiction mystery set in Boston in 1868. Quite enjoyable & since I live near Boston, the historical fiction part was very interesting.

Next mystery for me is Dead Simple by Peter James -- new author for me...

It was this sort of thing which made me join Goodreads - before I knew it had any sort of social aspect! Now I just have to get into the habit of logging books as I read them...

Finished "Case" this afternoon and I did end up enjoying it. I usually like books that jump from one character to another but for some reason this one didn't flow well for me. I have "One Good Turn" on hand and will read that next now that I'm more used to Atkinson's style.

But I absolutely love all of Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books.

Sandi | 73 comments I think we need to remind ourselves that what's in the book is the point, not the cover. Techy's toys aren't much fun for non-techy's.

message 384: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 130 comments Sandi, it helps me sometimes to learn new things, but I agree if it gets too complicated I get a bit lost. I have not had my computer at home very long. Just retired. And while I had one at work it had a lot of work-related systems that are pointless to me now.

Could not access any social networks (government rules) and did not program any as what was authorized was already loaded to THE BIG SERVERS IN THE SKY!!!

message 385: by Penny (new)

Penny | 353 comments I am almost finished with The Fabric of Sin (Merrily Watkins, #9) by Phil Rickman this is apparently no 9 in the Merrily Watkins series. More murder, ghosts and weird goings on!!

I tried to read "Room" for my book club and I couldn't do it. For some reason it just creeped me out so much I had to stop. The other members in my club raved about it and thought it was excellent.

Leslie | 1664 comments I just finished Dead Simple by Peter James a few days ago -- very enjoyable! This is the first of his Roy Grace series, set in Brighton.

This is the first of these I've read -- is James considered old school or new school?

message 389: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 40 comments Just finished One Good Turn (Jackson Brodie, #2) by Kate Atkinson "One Good Turn" by Kate Atkinson and liked it better than the first one in the series although I thought it was a bit farcical at times. Would probably make a good movie.

message 392: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar,
I just want to recommend a wonderful book "The Language of Flowers" by [author:Vanessa Diffenbaugh. It's not a mystery but one of the best books I have read. Just stack it in your TBR pile.
