message 1751: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments I'm reading an "oldie but goodie" Water like Stone by Deborah Crombie Don't know how I missed this as I thought I had read them all. The icing on the cake is it takes place at Christmas.

message 1752: by John (new)

John Frankham (johnfrankham) | 209 comments I've never heard of her, so thank you. We've 'investigated' her and see she's written 16 in the Kincaid/James series, from 1993. Sounds as if she has developed a lot over the period, from traditional whodunnit to more 'modern'. It's nice to start at the beginning, so my wife has just bought the first, A Share In Death, from Kindle. And she's from Yorkshire too. Looking forward to reading it. Ta.

I've read one - the 7th in the series, A Finer End - gave it 3*. The whole of my "review" says, "OK mystery set in Glastonbury". Think it must have been before Goodreads ...

message 1754: by Kay (new)

Kay | 218 comments I enjoy Deborah Crombie's books. I have read all that my local library has.

message 1755: by John (new)

John Frankham (johnfrankham) | 209 comments Jean - concise!

And I've downloaded Water Like Stone, to see how the longer, later ones read - better value for money!

message 1756: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments She seems to improve with each book. She really pulls you into her characters.

I'm thinking I should try another too :)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments She's one of my favorites.

Susan Davis | 109 comments It's a wonderful day when I find a new author that I like and that's what makes this group so valuable.

Thanks for the hot tips! I've just added these to my Netflix Q, though I sure can't picture Michael Gambon as Maigret.

message 1762: by Kay (new)

Kay | 218 comments I just discovered that I have Maigret's Christmas. It is in the middle of some old books that I bought at a book sale in October.

Lovely, Kay!
I have ordered series 2 of "Maigret" from the library, so hope it makes sense without the first ones.

message 1764: by John (new)

John Frankham (johnfrankham) | 209 comments Serendipity, Kay!

Jean, they're fine out of sync.

Good-oh :)

message 1766: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments New books from two of my favorites. Charles Todds "A Fine Summers Day" due out in January. It's a preqel to the Rutledge series. And a new Susan Hill book, did I miss this release? Right now reading a Bryant and May that's also fairly new. YIPEE

Susan - Is it the latest ghost story by Susan Hill that you mean, or the latest Simon Serrailler?

message 1768: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments The latest Simon: The Soul of Discretion. Sorry should have given the title. I have 12 books to read and more on order. I'm going to have to give up sleeping.

message 1769: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 2930 comments Mod
Ooo I haven't heard of that one! But I heard the latest Christmas ghost story was a bit hackneyed - and also not very well proofread on Kindle!

message 1770: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments I saw the same comments but good reviews on the latest Simon. Very different.

message 1771: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 2930 comments Mod
Odd, isn't it? Perhaps she feels obliged to churn out the ghost stories now because they are so popular, but her heart isn't really in it any more.

message 1772: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments I tried the "ghost story" but just couldn't get into it.

I must get back into that series...I really enjoyed it. 8:D

message 1774: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) The Simon Serrailler series is one of my favourites. Glad to hear there is a new book due.

message 1775: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 83 comments I finished Mystery in White which was one of our December read options - the library purchase, ordered in September, finally arrived. I found it an enjoyable period piece - not a lot of action (which is fine with me), but the story built to a satisfying conclusion with just a bit too much psychic insight.

message 1776: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) Did anybody ever read Elizabeth Lemarchand's mysteries? I used to enjoy them, but they seem to be quite difficult to find these days. (I'm cleaning bookshelves and stumbled on a copy which jogged my mind!)

message 1777: by S.K. (new)

S.K. Rizzolo (skrizzolo) | 30 comments No, Lemarchand is a new writer for me, but these books sound quite intriguing. I see that my local library has some of them available, though not on Kindle.

message 1778: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments My library didn't have any and you're right nothing on Kindle. I just finished a book quite enjoyed: Perfect Sins by Jo Bannister. Lots of twists
and turns but not too heavy.

message 1779: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments I also have 3 or 4 Lemarchands on my shelves, but I had forgotten about her. I notice that several of her books are available in used bookstores though. Just google Fantastic Fiction, enter her name, then click on book titles and the site will direct you to sellers.

message 1780: by Kay (new)

Kay | 218 comments Jean, do you have to use a credit card to get books from these sellers? I'm a little uncomfortable doing that if I'm not familiar with a company.

message 1781: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments It's done through Amazon, so you only have to trust them. We order a lot from Amazon and Amazon UK and have never had a problem.

message 1782: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments BTW, Amazon also keeps up with what you've bought on kindle and warns you if you're about to buy something you already bought. I never remember titles - only author's names and cover art plus the book itself of course - so this is really a big point with me.

message 1783: by Kay (new)

Kay | 218 comments Thanks. I order from Amazon a lot so I guess I trust them. I love hearing about new authors from all of you.

Kay - Glad you asked, as I am someone who never EVER does any financial stuff over the internet, even though it is becoming increasingly difficult. It is as Jean says, but I'll give you my background on it.

About 3 years ago I was given one of the first kindles as a present by my brother. Since I'm partially sighted, ebooks definitely seemed the way to go. But Amazon insisted I record it with them first. I did this by phone, including credit card details.

As this opened an account with them, I never have to put any details in on the computer, whatever I buy.

I hope this helps! They were surprised on the phone, that I refuse to put card details online, but it is possible if you insist! :)

Reading it again, it looks as if you've solved your problem, Kay, but I'll leave it up there for anyone who wonders.

I love that.....i have several times gone to buy something that was already on my Kindle but hadn't yet read. 8:D

message 1789: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments Sandra, I don't recognize the titles of books I've read. Some kind of mental block, I guess; I just remember the author and cover art. Several times I've bought a book - in a hurry, didn't look inside - only to get home, read the first line, and remember the whole thing. I really have an excellent memory - just not for titles.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) ...and then they put them out with different covers!!!!

message 1791: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments And with different titles! One of my pet peeves . . . . For a while, I actually carried around a list of the books I had by some favorite authors - 4 front-and-back sheets of tiny print - and still wound up with some duplicates because of that.

message 1792: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments I did the list thing too. I seem to have lists of everything, favorite authors, books I've read, books want to read. The lists have taken over my life.

message 1793: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments I'm not a list person - as I said, my memory is really good for almost everything else that I actually want to remember and even a lot I don't. I remember phone numbers from my childhood, the menu of that restaurant we loved in Honolulu 40 years ago, chemical formulas and equations I haven't used in 20 years, poetry that I read in high school . . . . So the book title thing is really, truly annoying. Does anyone have memory tricks that might help? I've tried the run-it-up-the-flagpole one and the repeat-it-five-times-write-it-on-your-forehead ones - nothing.

message 1794: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments I Hope you get some good suggestions. Sometimes I remember the book jackets but not always.

message 1795: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments Yes, I always remember cover art - but then they change that.

And I had an alphabetical notebook......that didn't work either!

message 1798: by Kay (new)

Kay | 218 comments I just ordered the January book from Amazon and they told me that I already bought it. Great service!

message 1799: by Susan (new)

Susan Davis | 109 comments Me too and not only that it say's I'm half way through. I think I need to refresh my memory. I had something on order from the library and when it came in I put my Kindle aside. Says I ordered it November 24th.

message 1800: by Kay (new)

Kay | 218 comments So did I ! There must have been a reason.
