Are you interested in her Wexford series or her other stuff?

message 1303: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Williams (1289) | 55 comments Mike, Reckless Endangerment does sound interesting, so I will try it. Since I have gotten older, I have a problem remembering all the characters (suspects). Glad to hear of another police procedural series to follow. Thanks.

I haven't read any of her other stuff yet or any other Wexfords. So any recommendations will be great.

Most of the Wexford novels are great. (I'm not crazy about her other stuff.) They don't need to be read in order, but there would be no harm in starting with the first one: From Doon With Death.

Susan Davis | 109 comments I agree I re

I like the Wexford series but I really, really like her other novels including the ones under her pseudonym Barbara Vine.
Some that I've read and recommend are The Face Of Trespass, The Bridesmaid, and The Water's Lovely to name a few. Each is totally different and each has a great ending.

Sonali V | 129 comments Diane, I agree about Rendell's other books...have you read The keys to the street. I was fascinated by the book.

Have read others by Mark Billingham, but not this one. The Bones Beneath will be going on my reading list.

Kathleen Cortlund | 21 comments I recently discovered Alison Bruce, who writes English police procedurals, my favorites. I really enjoy her, her mysteries are layered and her protagonist is unusual and interesting. I have only one left to read, and I hope she has another one out soon.

message 1330: by Penny (new)

Penny | 353 comments I finished Before The Poison by Peter Robinson I enjoyed it. Some of you know that I tried the first Banks book and wasnt that gripped so have tried Robinson again in this stand-alone. It s an unusual book with no copper and only one historical murder but I liked it!

That is one of the down sides to using covers -- they don't work well in the apps.

That's fine, but don't expect to have any more reading time, because odds are you won't. And yes, I speak from experience.

Joan | 314 comments Penny wrote: "I finished Before The Poison by Peter Robinson I enjoyed it."

I'm so glad you liked it. I absolutely loved the narrator of that one.

Please try some more Banks. The most recent one, Children of the Revolution, is good, but I still think that the best ones are the ones that come in the middle of the chronological order.

Have you read The Scarlet Pimpernel? I think it is her best, although I did enjoy her short story mysteries with Lady Molly...

I have that one sitting on the shelf (in a dry season) so at some point I'll try it.

Just finished Whispers of the Dead (David Hunter #3) by Simon Beckett which is number 3 in this series and I feel its getting better and growing as it progresses. These are forensic type crime but not overly heavy on it - there are other clues and events that are included.

message 1339: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Williams (1289) | 55 comments I have read all of the David Hunter series. I just wish there were more.

Definitely going to try them. They look interesting.

message 1341: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) I've just finished A Carrion Death. It's set in Botswana and less of a cozy series than The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

It is very pleasant to read a book where the main detective is well-adjusted, loves his food and drink, happily married and you do not have to deal with his issues as well as all the other characters' issues.

The authors use the cultural overlap of the region very well - South Africa/Namibia/Botswana/Angola/Zimbabwe with their respective languages as well as some of the tribal and other issues typical of the region.

The initial puzzle is well thought through although it becomes more of a "whydunnit" towards the end of the book. I'll be checking the rest of the series.

Susan - Lovesey is a name that pops up frequently that I have not read - would you recommend him?

Susan Davis | 109 comments I would recommend him. This particular book is 20 years old but still enjoyable. My list of favorite authors keeps growing and he's been on it for a very long time.
