I own the first 14 or so of the Amelia Peabody books, so I might join. I'll set up a separate thread.

And, Portia, thanks for the vote of confidence but I am just officious not official!

message 752: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum I think I have the first few Amelias and my daughter has most of the rest, so I'll go look for the new thread, too!

message 753: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum And, gosh, Leslie, you don't seem officious...

message 754: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 1664 comments Karlyne wrote: "And, gosh, Leslie, you don't seem officious..."

Haha maybe not in the meddlesome meaning but in the informal/unofficial sense :)

message 755: by Portia (new)

Portia You get the job done. How about "efficacious"?

message 756: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum Much better word, Portia; I seem to have been surrounded with officious people lately and I much prefer efficacious ones!

message 757: by Portia (new)

Portia I am reading Life After Life. This is her "what if the main character hadn't died at that point, then what" book, not a mystery but a very good read.

message 758: by Susan (new)

Susan | 606 comments Yea, we have another buddy read going. I've never read any of them so I'm very excited.

Wait, I'm lost (again!). Is there a buddy read of Kate Atkinson or were you answering someone else?

My favorite movie of all time is It's a Wonderful Life, so this premise, a variation of the what-if-she/he'd-never-been-born, sounds like a good one to me!

Arpita (BagfullofBooks) (bagfullofbooks) | 157 comments Portia - loved life after life, my very first kate Atkinson.

Thanks so much for setting it up. I listened to Amelia on my commute this morning and really just wanted to sit in the parking lot rather than turn it off and go into work.

message 763: by Susan (new)

Susan | 606 comments @Ellen, what is the first book in the series? Shall we start 9/1?
@Portia, I LOVED Life After Life. I went to the Bar Area to hear Kate Atkinson speak. She was wonderful. Maybe we should nominate it for the month's read. Something newer than Heyer.

Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first in the series.

Portia If I could whistle through my fingers I would.

LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, we're all getting really enthusiastic, and that is good. But we are not organized.

Leslie, would you care to be Lady Efficacious?

I would love to join in a Kate Atkinson and an Amelia Peabody, but Sept 1 is too soon for me (and maybe others) to get either book.

Plus, so many of us have first weeks of school to deal with.

So, can we do polls and set October 1 as the start date?

message 766: by Susan (new)

Susan | 606 comments I bow to you, Portia. You are right. I just got carried away. We do need Leslie to organize us. :). We do have an Inspector Morse for Sept. anyway.

message 767: by Poornima (new)

Poornima | 46 comments I just finished Payment Deferred by C.S. Forester. This was a brilliantly written psychological drama. Here's my review in case you are interested

October 1 would definitely work better for me!

message 769: by Portia (new)

Portia Hey, has anyone in the group read Anne Perry? She's a fave of mine.

message 770: by Portia (new)

Portia Oh, and the most recent Louise Penny landed as if by magic on my stoop yesterday. So many books ...

I like Anne Perry's novels. The Pitt mysteries are my favorite, but it is sort of hard to wrap my brain around her life story.

message 774: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum That's why the name was so familiar! Truth stranger than fiction?

Yes, Susan, and everyone else. I just got this book last month So Brilliantly Clever: Parker, Hulme and the Murder that Shocked the World. Haven't started it yet, though.

I'm going to have to read that!

message 777: by Portia (new)

Portia Oops, wrong book. THIS is the one Anne Perry and the Murder of the Century, but the other one sounds good, too. Same cover shot.

message 778: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 1664 comments I just finished a marvellous English thriller - A Gun for Sale by Graham Greene (only my American version is called This Gun for Hire). Not a mystery but I highly recommmend it if you like thrillers.

message 779: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum Wasn't there an old movie of This Gun for Hire? (I just looked it up: 1942, starring Veronica Lake and Robert Preston, classic film noire! Might be fun to watch!)

message 780: by Portia (new)

Portia I'm hearing Springsteen ...

Yes and as I read the book I did have a vague recollection of seeing the movie, especially in certain scenes.

Thanks Jean. I just looked up that thread!

message 783: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 1664 comments I am currently reading The Return of Sherlock Holmes - I think Conan Doyle is at his best with the short stories, although The Hound of the Baskervilles is certainly a classic.

message 784: by Poornima (new)

Leslie - I agree and much prefer the short stories to any of the four novels, though I seem to remember "A Study in Scarlet" as being better than the other two.

I think it is because I find Holmes annoying if I spend too much time with him!

message 788: by Portia (new)

Portia Reading Kate Atkinson's Life After Life and really enjoying it. Wish it fit our English Mysteries criteria for a group read. Has anyone else read if?

message 789: by Portia (new)

Portia Wait!! We had this discussion month ago. Sorry!!!

Penny | 353 comments Kaye wrote: "Currently reading The Dead Place by Stephen Booth. Excellent series!"

hey!! someone else who likes Stephen Booth. I have really enjoyed this series although its been a while since I read one, there have probably been some more published since I did. I love the settings and the 2 cops.

message 791: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) I've just completed Spy's Honour which is one of my all time favourite books. It's more a spy thriller, but set in 1912 when the British Secret Service is just being formed. Gavin Lyall's sense of humour and the time period is just a brilliant combination.

The only Stephen Booth I've read is Black Dog which I do remember finding quite gripping. It probably hepled that I recognised the locations, having grown up near the Peak District (in the North of England.)

message 793: by Penny (new)

Penny | 353 comments I just checked out Stephen Booth - apparently he is on his 13th book of the Cooper & Fry series. I have read about 9 of them but have quite a few to catch up on. I too liked the strength of the setting in the books but also how the 2 cops change through the books. They are so different to each other it makes for good reading.

Have also got to catch up on the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman.

I have read almost all of her books too and can't wait until she writes new ones. What I have read about her early adolescence is pretty horrific, but I am also pretty sure that it is something that she lives with every day. In my view it was a case of hormonal hysteria gone way, way too far.

There is a movie out as well as a book, but I can't remember the name.
