I took a technical writing course several years ago and the instructor insisted on active voice. I've found that when I write technical documentation it's the best, and clearest way to write.

When I read a great first line, I'm smitten. I hug the book I know I will love to my chest and head to the nearest checkout counter. Usually it's a strong, appealing voice that gets me (like in the amazing collection "Some Rain Must Fall")--or something unexpected in the language.
