I believe she was probably top in O.W.L.S. and N.E.W.T.S. I would venture a guess that she and Hermoine are similarly talented.
As for her powers as a witch, Voldemort marked her infant son as his equal, which means he was impressed with how powerful she and James were and imagined that their son would be someone to match him. And Voldemort was a brilliant wizard, just bad.

Dumbledore places an enchantment on the Dursley's home that was activated by that protection to keep him safe as long as he called it his home.
When Voldemort killed Harry in the forest, the part of Voldemort inside him died instead, leaving Harry free to return and defeat him. When all the horcruxes holding Voldemort's soul were destroyed, only a shell remained.
When they dueled and Voldemort cast the killing curse, Harry was able to deflect it back because the Elder wand belonged to Harry. That deflection caused Voldemort to be no more.
Does that help?

excellent explanation, except for this part.
If you'll recall, the Killing Curse can't be deflected or countered. What happened was that Harry went into the forest, prepared to sacrifice himself for everyone he knew (this also included Harry, himself). He went in, with not so much as a raised wand, facing his death. Remember when Dumbledore was talking to Snape and told him it was vitally important that Harry not fight back when the Dark Lord struck him down? This is why.
Because of this, he created the same magical barrier his mother made when she sacrificed herself for Harry. If you'll recall, the first time He-who-should-not-be-named used the Killing Curse on the infant Harry when he was protected, it reflected against him and would have killed him if not for his horcruxes.
In the final duel, the Dark Lord used the Killing Curse, while Harry used Expelliarmus (disarming spell). The same thing that happened to the Dark Lord when he faced Harry as an infant, happened again here, except he had no horcruxes. This is why the spell reflected off Harry and struck down He-who-should-not-be-named, and it also explains how the wand the Dark Lord was holding flew out of his hand, to be caught by Harry.

Jeni said about Voldemort marking Harry due to his parents power levels - this may well be the case but I took it that due to the prophecy Voldemort was faced with two possibilities - Harry and Neville. I always thought that Harry was chosen because his parents were more active in the fight against Volemort (I know that Nevilles parents were also part of the Order but as they were aurors you cannot be sure exactly how active they were in the Orders efforts and how much was part of their duty as aurors).

My motivation for believing they were very powerful was the fact that since Voldemort placed great importance on all things powerful, he would presume their magical prowess would make Harry the larger threat.
Also, to clear up my explanation earlier, the killing curse Voldemort used in the final duel was no match for the expelliarmus spell because the wand was allied with Harry, allowing it to be overcome and backfire on Voldemort. Thanks for the clearer explanation, Hai! :)
