Peter Drummond Peter, I think it's less about them being teenagers and more about these books being pretty terrible. Especially as the story advances past book 3.

Peter Drummond I'm sorry that you don't want people to have opinions Vaughn. I thought the series was terrible. Not because it was long but because it was aimless and uninspired, especially as it went on.

Did It capture my attention at the onset, sure, but that attention was Jordan's to lose and he did. All his world building was squandered.

Our experiences don't need to match - but that doesn't mean I should be barred from thinking it was awful. These books weren't just run of the mill time wasters, they changed my reading habits. I learned to leave a bad book unfinished with book 9 instead of sticking it out on benefit of doubt. My first instinct when I see anything about wheel of time is to say that the best thing written with Jordan's name on it was an obit.

So there it is. Civility aside, these books were a terrible experience for me.

Peter Drummond There you go again legislating Vaughn. When the post above yours uses the word terrible and you specifically call it out, you're being directed.

I simply responded in kind.

If someone calls something terrible, they are expressing an opinion. When you swoop in to tell people how tired you are of hearing that opinion, you're making a very pointed statement about how you view people who see things differently than you.

That's on you.

Peter Drummond But Vaughn, why are you so angry, Vaughn? I'm not being unfriendly, I simply don't agree with you and I don't appreciate your need to tell people how tired you are of their opinion for a book series you like... Especially in a, "should I read this thread."

That lack of appreciation is not the same as ad hominem attack. A personal attack would be more analogous to the obit line.

Trust me Vaughn, if I was attacking you, you'd know.

Lewstherin14 Yes but I feel that malazan or runelords are a better use of epic-reading time. I am half ay through the 5th WoT have read the first MBotF and the first cycle (1-4) of runelords.

Peter Drummond Oh, Vaughn, you kidder. Why would there be an issue with my using your posted handle on a website where people communicate.

Bill Golden You are both wrong, by the way.

Vaughn, the series isn't "DIFFERENT" if you describe it as Lord of the Rings for people who don't like Lord of the Rings. At that point, it becomes an adaptation, not a singular vision of a unique author. Also, you are tending to gloss over the later volumes of the series (I have already denoted them earlier in the thread).

Also, reporting people on Goodreads has all of the effect of pissing in the ocean to spite the fish. I was reported by someone who I absolutely attacked in response to his attacking me, and nothing happened. I reported him and got a polite "please just stop talking to him" in response.

Asher, this series isn't terrible. Twilight is terrible. Many of the books from D&D are terrible (or, if you prefer, absolutely awful... I'm looking at you, Troy Denning and your endless use of "damson" and "murk"). Wheel of Time is just uneven.

Just my 2¢.

Peter Drummond Not having read Twilight, I couldn't speak on it with authority. As to many of the D&D type books, okay, sure, Jordan is no Richard A. Knaak (Vaughn probably loves him too and will report me again for besmirching Knaak's good name - oh Vaughn, I miss you already).

I still contend that the series is much worse than uneven, hence the obituary line that Vaughn so loved. A bad book is committed to its own failings at the onset, but a book with squandered potential is much worse in my mind.

Otherwise, solid points Bill. I will steer clear of Denning going forward.
