Andrea Was it because of how it ended and who died? I mean, I don't understand. It's not supposed to be a fairy tale where everything ends happily. These books are about revolution. Of course there's going to be some deaths and mental illnesses that come about. At least it doesn't lie to us by saying everyone lived happily ever after. Life isn't always like that. So can you really blame Katniss for "acting like her mother" at the end of the book? She went through so much. Yes, she's supposed to be a strong character, but this part is supposed to make us think. Suzanne wants us to know what war does to people.

Aurora I agree. I think it was very well done and I was satisfied with the ending.

Jennifer its not really dislike .. for me its just after reading the ending i feel bad about all the dying . dont get me wrong i think katniss is better of choosing the life with peeta its just that why do it feels like shes not happy with the choice she made

Nina I don't dislike Mockingjay. I was just disappointed because it felt uncompleted and rushed. I had so many questions in the end.

Haidi Like you said, people are not used to a book ending like this and a lot of people don't like change. It's confronting and real and honest.

I found it a very different book to the other two, and sometimes found it hard to visualise what was being told but I still loved the book.

Like I often say about trilogies, for me I don't view them as 3 separate books but one whole story.

Emily I think the whole trilogy was amazingly written and I loved the story line, but there were times where I wished that the characters were happier in the end. Then again I do agree that it makes the message of the book stronger, but still...

l I think the readers DID understand the THG wasn't a fairytale, and it wasn't going to have a Disney-style ending.

It was about war and death.

The reason Mockingjay disappointed me was that I had so many unanswered questions.

What happened to Gale? We know he moved to Two, but did he ever get in contact with Katniss? Did he marry? have children? Die?

How's Haymitch doing? Still got the geese? Is he dead or something? Does he like their little munchkins?

Did Katniss visit Johanna, Annie, her mother, Beetee after the war?

We were left wondering about the rest of the characters, other than Katniss and Peeta.

It also seemed very rushed. "Peeta and I grew back together." -_______- Cool, Katniss.

Was it soon? Was it romantic?

Collins didn't EXPLAIN.

Emily I agree, I get that maybe she wanted us to have the freedom to imagine what we thought would happen, but I would've liked to have had more information. It would be so interesting if Collins wrote about the future so we could see how the character's lives went.

message 9: by Jen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jen SPOILERS included. Read at your own risk.

I disliked it for the most part because:

A) Katniss passes out so much that it's unrealistic.

B) I hated how an important character would die and Katniss rarely reflected on any of them. (Hey, I'm going to kill this somewhat important character (BAM! Sorry!) and Katniss never mourns or thinks about them, nor do they ever get discussed again. )

C) Just seemed VERY rushed. Particularly at the end.

D) I like that it ended on a happier note but since book one, Katniss has been assuring us that she never wants a husband and kids. Just seems a little unrealistic. I could handle one or the other, but both makes me think it's rather strange.

Maybe that's the point--showing how she changed after the war or whatever, but if it was, well, it fell a bit flat. Instead, it felt like the author just randomly wasn't sure how to end it and was like "Oh let's add that Katniss ends up with Peeta and they have two kids!"

E) I won't get into the plot holes.

All and all, I rated it 3. I liked it but at the same time I wanted to throw it against the wall. It seemed like a very rushed book to wrap things up. I loved the first two. There are parts I really liked about Mockingjay, but overall it disappointed me.

I loved some of the new characters and some of the plot, but it wasn't enough. Also, CINNA :'-(

These are just my thoughts. :-)

Faith It was just really rushed. And it seemed that the author was killing off people. I felt that the plot wasn't bad but I was very depressed and confused at the end.

Erica i didnt like the last books cause it left so many questions unanswered. like gale, why did he leave? they're so many reasons. i think if the series contuine katniss will look for his best friened gale in district 2. she couldnt live without him. i also wanted a scene about katniss and her mom, cause her mom tried to ignore her and it proboly hurt katniss feelings.but i didnt like the people who died cause some where unnessery. but that isnt the reason at all to me. these are my thoughts.

Audrey Klosterman i didn't like mockingjay that much. mabey that was because i didn't finish it but i still didn't like it as much as hg and cf.

i know right! its like suzanne decided to stop and just wrap things up. it was like BANG he is dead. BANG there dead. BANG all the people they love is dead.and BANG gale left katniss BANG now she goes to peeta. then BANG happy ending. *shaking head*

message 14: by Jen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jen ^^^ *nods nods!* BANG BANG BANG I think you are right.

message 15: by Joe (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joe Gibson I agree with Cassy completely! It seemed so damn rushed towards the end. In the space of a few chapters we had Prim, Snow, Coin all die and then we had all this really rushed story of Katniss going back to district 12, ending up with Peeta, and then having kids! If she could have added just another 100 or so pages to just space things out it would've been great.

Elizabeth Day I just think it wasn't as good as the others.

Chriselle For me it just lacked the intensity, passion, and Katnissness, and the familiarity of the other books. Oh, and action.

Julie I agree with a lot of the points about the rushed writing in Mockingjay: it's as if Collins stopped writing for readers and hustled along to write a Hollywood pitch. A great pity because she has created some excellent and amazing characters. I have no problem with harsh, truthful outcomes for some of those characters. I would love to read 'Peeta's Games' covering the same timespan as the original trilogy but all from Peeta's point of view: a much darker and more introspective telling I would imagine.

That would be very interesting. I'd like to read that! Good idea!

Kaeri It was a bit chaotic, some plots were just crammed, rushed and put into the mix to play out without proper order, like a messy Hollywood action film. It lacked the character development the first two books had. And the ending felt forced (in terms of Peeta and Katniss' relationship)... like them ending up together was just added and said for the benefit of the fans.

Julia For the most part, I thought the book was really well done and I definitely didn't dislike it. My biggest problem with the book (and really, the series) is that there were just too many loose ends at the end of it all. I would never expect the life stories of all the additional characters to be told, but I would have appreciated a bit of an epilogue about them. One more chapter could have enhanced the story quite a bit.

You simply can't hold deaths such as Finnick's against Collins - it is a novel about a revolution, people (both good and bad) are going to die. If anything, the harsh reality of the way these characters met their end made me enjoy the series more. You become attached to these characters, you fight these battles with them, and you feel the loss after they've gone.

The first time I read it I absolutely hated the ending and pretty much went on a rampage. I hated the fact that Prim died, that Katniss voted for a new Capitol Hunger Games, that she got with Peeta (I love him but I was firmly Team Gale) and that the ending just seemed so... Depressing and mundane. I expected Katniss to go on to do bigger and better things. After rereading it, I really love Mockingay, thankfully. I was probably just blindsided by the shock of it all.

message 23: by Ms. (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ms. Anderson The ending wasn't good enough. And it was too happy. I was expecting something like Brave New World or 1984.

message 24: by Jenn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenn I thought it was fantastic. It mirrored what real life is about in these situations. Tons of bad things seem to happen all at once (I like the above comments that said BANG BANG BANG) and sometimes you can't STOP to mourn those you lose until you are safe to do so. When Katniss finally did get that chance, we went crazy for a bit. Then it trails off into a mixed ending where she's attempted to have a happy life but is obviously still sad over what she's lost. Sure, we all wonder what happened to Gale - we all wonder about that lost love, "the one who got away," because that's life. It made the entire series that much more real for me.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I enjoyed the ending but I did find it emotionally draining. I lost it when I read about Prim. But the ending fits the style of the the entire series. I also think real love isn't just the mush and goo but about finding what/who you need in your life. So I found the end with Peta very satisfying.

Mockingjay was more a book I kept on reading just to find out in the end. Even if I just kept going on to find out the end it's better than reading the end on the internet. Mockingjay kept the good base but the war was too gruesome. Pain and fear are some common feelings in the Hunger Gmaes series but when using such a base she did not take it out of hand during the first 2 books. Then during Mockingjay it's just a bloody war! Deathly Hallows kept that sense of friendship and loyalty which is the base of most of the stories. Mockingjay had the base but when buliding up from it it was centered around the war. A war is long and so when Katniss seemes rushed when explaining deaths, the fear and the anger the impact is weak.

message 27: by nada (new) - rated it 4 stars

nada i loved the ending, however i was disappointed because i thought the first and second book were...more.
more creative, and more explained.

but its still one of my favorite books .

exactly though i still like the book too i felt sad that so many of my favourite characers died it was so ABRUPT you know?

Zarmal J.N. wrote: "^^^ *nods nods!* BANG BANG BANG I think you are right."

lol so true tho :(

Eed99 #1 I thought the book in general seemed rushed-and I didn't like the fact that it was told through Katniss' POV but she spent tons of time passed out and much of the action was Katniss telling the reading what she had been told. I would rather have seen the POV changed or Katniss to have spent more time awake.

I didn't particularly mind that a lot of people died, but it seems like there wasn't much mourning.

#2 I hated the way she wrote Gale in the last book. I think packing off and leaving Katniss just seemed out of character. I always hated the love triangle aspects in the book, but I still thing that Gale would have taken the time to say good bye.

I also think Peeta was kind of out of character as well. Or at least Peeta behave in a way that wouldn't make me want to spend my life with him.

#3 I have a really hard time believing that Peeta and Katniss can get married and live happily ever after. I think what happened to them both in the arena and during the war depicted in Mockingjay that both of them are just too broken to ride off into the sunset of a happy ending.

Collins went there as far as killing off a lot of main characters, but I think the happy ending didn't ring true and tried too hard to force it. I would have been happier if Katniss ended the story unhappy and messed up.

Estefania I'm ok with realistic endings, I don't really mind for Prim's death, in fact I think there should have been more deaths, what I did not like was the way everything happened, I mean, there was Katniss fighting and stuff and suddenly Prim appears from nowhere and dies in front of Katniss' eyes, I don't think that's realistic at all!
Other thing that I didn't like was when Katniss was recovering in the president's house (because it was the better place right? they couldn't find a hospital or something) and she spoke to him, how could she even speak to him?!, President Coin was smart, but she wasn't thinking that if she let them be together, they might speak and maybe something bad could happen after that?!

I loved Catching Fire, but I think that many of the things that characters do in Mockingjay doesn't seem realistic, that kind of things seemed to me just like excuses to add more dramma, and in my personal opinion Suzanne Collins should have taken her time to write this book and give to this saga the ending it deserved.

Kate i personally found it boring and hard to follow

message 33: by Cali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Cali because prim died. period

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I get all that. But it's a book, a story, a piece of fiction and at the end you're supposed to smile a little and feel fulfilled, like you didn't stick with the series for nothing. And at the end of Mockingjay I did not feel that. I was just like, "okay....and she went through so much just to end up like that. Settling for Peeta, yay?"

Yep, you're so right. Mockingjay felt so rushed and overdone. Mockinjay was not the ending we needed, not even the one we deserved.

Christy I liked then ending but I also believed that she rushed it. I mean Finnick only had 2 setnteces or so when he died and that was it.. I liked Finnick..

Tammi I personally loved all the books. I wast sort of disappointed at the ending and felt like I had so many questions unaswered.

sonya marie madden i'm not done with the whole series; I think I'll read them in order in place of jumping around.

BTW: You Know Who should not have died. Too good of a character, not cool Collins, not cool.

Christy I liked Boggs.. He was my favorite and Cinna!! (If that is how you spell it)

Emily It wasn't the deaths that upset me, more that it ended too abruptly for my taste.

message 44: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 11, 2012 06:58PM) (new)

for me it was because mockingjay went against everything the series and katniss had been fighting for since the beginning. mockingjay was full of half formed plots, senseless violence for the sake of publicity, and actions by characters that just did not fit with their previously established personality. for instance, katniss's choice to hold another hunger games was done out of malice, something i had thought katniss was above. finnick's death was senseless and, in my mind, just done so Collins could rack up a few tears. the entire trek into the capitol and the ads katniss does were superficial and embarrassing. to summarize, i hated this book because to me it felt like a cheap ending. this series started out SO good and it deserved the best ending possible and instead it got a cookie cutter ending in the hopes of bringing in cash. this book didn't make me sad or happy or heart broken. i was disappointed and embarrassed for Collins.

WONDERFUL explanation. THANK YOU. you said what i couldn't say.

Cookie To me, it seemed too sad, with not enough hope.

Dragon I agree with you. I also think how it was stupid where she decided to pick Peeta because Gale wasn't good enough. Peeta wins by default.

tiffany i loved it it was my favorite of the 3

Kayla Humphreys I feel like with the way she wrote it, it seemed like she just threw it all together and sent it right off to publishing. It didn't feel finished, it had a crappy ending (I don't mean happy, because I'm not exactly a sucker for happy endings, but I mean crappy. It just...ended.), and I get that it's a revolution going on, but that doesn't mean you have to kill EVERYBODY! That's exactly what it felt like they did.

I hate Katniss because she's such a weak character in this book and does nothing to make me feel for her, relate to her, or like her, so there's nothing that's keeping me wishing she would stay alive. Honestly, I kinda wish Peeta would have killed that self-centered girl!

It was also probably the worst epilogue I have ever read. I just didn't feel like a...best selling novel should. When I go and pick up a best selling novel off of the table labeled as such, I expect a book that feels polished and the words jump off the page and rock my world. This made me want to end my world myself.

'Nuff said.
