Ash Thomson (snoozette88) | 10 comments I only realized he was an Aussie after reading the inside cover, but I've just started 'The Rook' by Daniel O'Malley, and even though I'm only up to chapter 2 it has really grabbed me. I like his writing style and he has the perfect amount of description, also you always know where you are when you're reading. One of my pet peeves when I'm reading is when you have no idea who is talking or where they are, or characters are suddenly somewhere else and you think 'what? when did that happen'. This doesn't happen in this book, well not yet anyway :)

M.R. Cullen I recently read The Beast's Garden by Kate Forsyth.

I also read Pamela Hart The Solider's Wife last year and thought it was such a great story, and with so much detail.

Sandy Sexton | 20 comments Hello,
I'm hoping some of you will help me with some recommendations. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated! I'm going for a two week visit to Tasmania in September, and would love some ideas for books by Tassie authors, books set in Tassie or great bookshops to visit in Devonport, Launceston or Hobart. Thanks in anticipation.

We have some lovely Tassie members Sandy, as well as Elaine who went to Tassie recently and loved it. There are a number of books written by and about so you'll be spoiled for choice :)

Good luck and have a fabulous holiday when you go :)

Thanks, Brenda. This one certainly has mixed reviews! It might be fun to read it to see which side I come down on. Thanks for the recommendation. I made a point of finishing the last of my June Juggling books today so that I can get started on the Tasmania recommendations. What a great group Aussie Readers is.

I've read and enjoyed a lot of YA over the years. I was in the habit of having my students choose books for me, and always found much to love in the YA novels. I'll certainly read Saving Wishes.

Yes - I was trying to remember which book I'd read recently had been set in Tasmania and that was it! Others I've read, but not recently, are Family Secrets by Liz Byrski and Poet's Cottage by Josephine Pennicott.

Thanks, Kathryn. Incidentally, I clicked on your profile, and we have the same birthday - Aug 13. I'll try to remember to wish you a happy birthday.

Ooh, no, don't cancel - that's the best part!! And if you see the things you've been reading about, then that's even better!

And it's nice to get a weekend day for our birthday this year and next, Sandy! Hope you have a great day in a couple of months!

Lea Davey | 47 comments I was fixated by this story for years - the story of Sid Kidman who ran away on a one eyed horse when he was thirteen and went on to become the largest private land-owner in Australia. I made my family visit Kapunda in SA (where Kidman lived) when we travelled there and used to always search out historical sites Kidman was associated with. A true pioneer of Australia and the book takes you back to what life was like in Australia for our early cattlemen. Love to know what you think of it.

I have that on my list but had no idea she was the daughter of Anne Deveson, who apparently died three days after Georgia Blain. Anne was a very public figure and fought hard for more understanding for schizophrenia after losing her son Jonathon (overdose).

That poor family.

message 297: by Merv (new)

Merv Bonnell | 16 comments Patty, great book to have on your list, yes Anne was her Mother, such a sad story, Georgia Blain also wrote a very good column for The Saturday Paper called "The Unwelcome Guest" when she was very sick, inspirational lady. It is worth checking out on Google.

I think I may even have read that column, Merv - had no idea of the family connection (or the illness, obviously). I look forward to the book even more now.
