Paula-O (kyflo130) | 2257 comments Hi Deborah and Renee,
congrats on your award win, good news.
In your august book you are writing about orphans, Why did you write about this subject and does it hold a place close to your heart. I have enjoyed reading books like the orphan train stories so this one looks to be a good read, thanks for sharing today...

J. (sissteele) Missed yesterday and want to tell Cheryl I am reading her book now and really enjoying it.

Renee, congrats again. I think I am stalking you everywhere just so I can say how glad I am for you. Loved Charity House so no need to put me in!

Peace, Julie

OH, Renee, I hope you do write those Ellis Island books you're thinking about. I visited Ellis Island with my family (my grandfather had gone through as an immigrant). And I found it fascinating.

message 55: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 518 comments Renee, I love your books, and the Civil War period is one of my favorites, so I can't wait to read this one. I also agree with Janet. Books about Ellis Island would be faccinating. Congratulations on your award! Is there one book you've written that seemed harder to complete than the others for some reason?

message 56: by Ausjenny (new)

Ausjenny | 4959 comments ok I tried replying and its not working.

firstly it will be interesting seeing hunters story and how you change him from an angry man to a hero.

i have this months book (thanks Renee) I hope to get to it soon. but am not reading like I want. it takes about 8 days to read a book at present.

Is a shame WW2 doesn't sell. There are so many stories that come from that era same with WW1. Ellis Island sounds good also.I dont watch Downton Abby so not sure what the reference to downton abbey meets Edith Wharton's New York means.

I could imagine your books would be harder to write

message 57: by Ausjenny (new)

Ausjenny | 4959 comments Oh I really want to read about Hunter. I can see you would have fun with him.

No I dont watch Downton Abby, I watched the first episode and just couldn't get into it. I know Im strange. I do like once upon a time.

Laura AKA Loves 2 Read Romance | 909 comments I have never seen Downtown Abby either so I am also a little lost. But that's ok. I really like the idea of Ellis Island books! I absolutely loved the Irish Brides series that came out earlier this year. I can see Ellis Island having some similar situations.

Paula-O (kyflo130) | 2257 comments I was surprised this morning when I opened up the family fiction weekly newsletter to see all four of these authors first on the list in historicals..
Today must be Debra's day so I will be back with a question, it has been a fun week with everyone.

Wonderful news about Family Fiction, Paula! Go LIH!

To round out our Q&A week, I'm delighted to haveDebra Ullrick with us! Debra had written for other inspirational publishers before selling to LIH where she quickly became a favorite with readers! Her August book Groom Wanted has such an intriguing premise of two friends who seek mail-order spouses.

Welcome, Debra! I love the idea for this story. Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired it?

message 62: by Ausjenny (new)

Ausjenny | 4959 comments Sounds like an interesting book Debra where did you get the idea for the book?

Laura AKA Loves 2 Read Romance | 909 comments I love mail-order spouse stories! It looks like this one has an interesting twist. I will have to keep my eyes out for it. So far the walmart by my house hasn't changed the books to August yet.

message 64: by Paula-O (new)

Paula-O (kyflo130) | 2257 comments Yea me too, love this type of book, reminds me of the story when women in town formed a grp and advertised for grooms. Your take of the couple looking for spouses for one another is just so cute, did you know someone that had done this Debra?
I loved your book Unlikely Wife.

Hello Paula and thank you for inviting me to join in the discussion for this month's LIH releases.

What inspired me was the first two books in the series had a mail-order theme. I wondered how I could keep that flowing throughout the rest of the unmarried Bowen members and yet still make it believable. Then I remembered that Jake and Leah had ran the sack race together in my story, The Unlikely Wife. So, I wondered how I could use them and still have a mail-order bride theme, especially since they were neighbors. What if two friends both wanted spouses and if they saw how it had worked for Haydon and Michael? I knew Leah wanted to leave the Idaho Territory and I also knew Jake wanted to stay. How would I ever make this work? That's when I came up with the idea that both of them could post ads and help each other find their perfect mail-order match. As they say, the rest is history.

Hi AussieJenny. Long time no chat. Hope you are feeling better now. I was sorry to hear you had been sick. You sure are loved. Everybody wondered where you were. I'm so glad you are back on Goodreads.

I answered your question above. *smiling*

I'm going to check my Walmart's today to see if they've arrived yet. I have a bunch of errands to run and Walmart is one of them, and I just can't stay away from the book section. Especially the LI section. Only problem is...I spend too much money when I do. hehe

No. I didn't know anyone who had done this. You rarely see a woman advertising for a husband. The men usually do the advertising, so I thought it would make a nice twist and would be something different.

I actually heard someone say that mail-order stories were unbelievable as no one had done that in the past. Well, that person didn't know their history. They are memoirs of women who had done it and it was quite common as women had a hard time supporting themsevles back then. And me were so busy they didn't always have time for courting. Can you imagine marrying someone that you've never met? YIKES! NOT ME! hehe

message 71: by Debra (new)

Debra Ullrick | 64 comments Okay, gotta run and mail my AA's off to my editor and run my errands. But, I will be back. Scary, huh? hehehe Thanks everyone for your interests and questions. I'll see you all in about an hour or so.

I've done that too, Jennifer. I can't imagine marrying without love. All you could do was hope you would fall in love with that person eventually. Imagine how frightening it really would be to go to a strange land, to marry a complete stranger. At least today we get to know them before we marry them. And while there are no guarantees in any marriage, I'd still like to know what I'm getting. hehehe

Ausjenny | 4959 comments My penpal married a man she was writing to. She went to meet him and they got married. A friend from here said his best friend did the same the couple had been writing for quite awhile and they got engaged without acutally meeting each other. So it still happens even in our time.

I am doing alot better than I was. its six weeks today. I still tire very easy and looks like I may have picked up yet another cold. Seems I pick them up so easy at present. But considering how I was I am doing really well. I have heard others stay its taken a couple of months to get over the tiredness. At least I sleep well and have read for about 20 mins the last two nights which is progress.

Ausjenny -- I am glad you are gradually getting better. I'm sure it will take a while. I like the pen pal stories -- I've noticed you often use a letter in the Writing Challenges you have done on Harlequin.com.

on the mail order brides. I think its the same as todays internet dating. alot email before meeting. For someone to say it was unbelivable really didn't read history.

You're so right, AusJenny. It would be a lot like Internet dating. Only difference is you have a picture of the person. I actually have a book coming out shortly titled: FOREWARNED. It's about a gal who goes online and ignores the warnings of her friends regarding a certain person she converses with. The whole premise of the book is about how God warns us and we don't listen and the consequences of our choices.

Are you still struggling with illness, AusJenny?

Debra, not struggling as much but I have realised it takes time to recover. I talked to one of the nurses who was there with me when I came in and went into surgery with me. She said after what I went through its normal to still tire easy and not be back to my former self yet. Its encouraging to hear this as often by 5pm I am just so tired and often by 7pm wanting to fall asleep. but I am improving. I lasted the whole time at my computer course yesterday (Im doing publisher at present). Last week I left an hour early.

message 85: by Debra (new)

Debra Ullrick | 64 comments I'm sorry you're still not up to par. What is publisher? What kind of course is that?

message 86: by Ausjenny (new)

Ausjenny | 4959 comments Publisher is Microsoft Publisher a office programme.
I am way better than I was and have been told the tiredness can last for a bit but I can do most things. If i had to work full time I would be exhausted by the end of the day but I am doing so much better.

Sounds good Debra. I have toyed around with the idea of going on a dating site but haven't been brave enough to actually take that step. I think part of it is not knowing if the people on the site are like their profile or a serial killer looking for their next victim. Lol can you tell I read a lot of romantic suspense along with historicals.

Laura, I don't blame you for being concerned. And yet, I know people who have found their mates online. Maybe you need to read, Forewarned. It just might help you. *smiling* Seriously, you hear so many horror stories about the Internet dating thing, but then again, that's the news for you. They only report bad. They never report the hundreds or thousands of people who have found love online. I have a friend who did a Christian dating thingy and they intermediate. I think she said they first converse via letters, then phone, and then I think they meet with the dating service people present. Something like that.

message 90: by Ausjenny (last edited Aug 10, 2012 01:15AM) (new)

Ausjenny | 4959 comments I did the diploma of business administration last year and am looking for work in the admin field, I dont want to be an office manager but data entry, admin work etc.
even working online in data entry etc. I am currently helping someone set up a blog as a website with graphics and all and that sort of work would be good.
Even being working in promotion online would be cool.

A friend and I have started an blog alliance. Australia Christian Readers blog Alliance (http://acrba.blogspot.com). we are promoting Aussie books but will also feature other books with One fiction a month and one non fiction or childrens book. We are accepting reviewers from all over but overseas reviewers may get a ebook or pdf rather than print book. This is the sort of work I would love to do.

When I did publisher before it was in 07 its now 10 and it to help keep the skills up. Also keeps me out of mischief.
