Fun pictures, Hambel and Kari. I also enjoy hearing about everyone's travels. This page was a really good idea.

If you drive there, there's a parking building on the left before entering Gibraltar, so you walk into Gibraltar, buy your ticket to go up to the Rock and take the bus to the city center. I wouldn't advise driving into Gibraltar.

True! :) I can only travel at the end of summer unfortunately, I would love to experience the Northern countries in colder months, long nights, snow, etc.

Usually I am not a fan of the colder months, but I have to admit I would like to show you a cold clear winters night on the mountain, with the Northern lights playing across the midnight sky and the stars so big and clear as you never see them anywhere else. And when we walk across the snow our footsteps make that special sound you can't hear at any other time. And then inside to a fire in the fireplace, some good red wine and a book by Josh :), our cheeks red from the cold and our eyes clear.

In a funny way I think it ended up being a compromise between large print (which I've considered but I know some readers actively HATE it) and regular print.

We left the line spacing at 1.5 which works so nicely on the ebooks, but had I reduced it to 1 it would have made for a cheaper (though perhaps harder to read) book.

Sounds wonderfully familiar. :) And if there would be thaw the next day, Will and Taylor could make weird looking snowmen and have a snowball fight (with you and Emanuela). ;)

No! Don't reduce the font size! It's lovely to be able to read a book painlessly and without even thinking about the font because it's just the right size.

Me too! Don't reduce the font size! Lost my glasses so I can't read pretty much anything in print right now. (One would think losing my glasses would be difficult since I wear them on a chain around my neck. One would be be very wrong.)

Isn't it incredible to see these places -- that they places still exist? We have such a bad habit of tearing down the old in this country.

The problem is people writing on the ancient monuments or breaking them out of spite.

I lose hope for the human race sometimes. We have that out there too in the desert -- Indian hierogylphs scrawled over with graffiti. WHY? Or pieces broken off and carried away.

While we lived in the States my parents came to visit. I took them to DC and particularly to the National Mall. One of the memorials (I think it was the Vietnam one) had a book with the names of all who had died in that conflict, and it was just a regular book, under a plastic cover to protect from rain but otherwise open to browsing. My father (late seventies at the time) was just astounded and actually quite jealous: in Germany any such book would have been vandalised within minutes of its existence.

message 185: by Calathea (last edited Sep 30, 2012 07:19AM) (new)

Calathea | 6034 comments I'm back from Scotland, too. Unlike Antonella I've been to the east and did all the touristy stuff as it was my first time there. Just let me say: I loved it!

Unfortunately, I couldn't bring my hard copy of ASW with me. I only ordered it shortly before I left for Scotland and arrived at home while I was there. So the Kindle version must do.

Here's one pic that I took on the wall around the south yard at Rosslyn Chapel that most people know from Angels and Demons and the other books by Dan Brown.
You just have to believe me that it is where I say it was taken. ;)

The other one was taken at the Sir Walter Scott Monument in Edinburgh. I could wrestle a travel companion into holding the Kindle for me, so I could take the photo with the monument as a backdrop. When he saw the name Holmes on the cover he was quite curious about the book because he was (what I didn't know) a big fan of anything Sherlock Holmes. So I told him. I don't know if he's going to read it... ;)

Nice pics, but why didn't you say something in advance? I climbed the 287 steps of the monument last Wednesday! Where you there?

message 187: by Calathea (new)

Calathea | 6034 comments Steps? What steps? (Are we talking about the same thing on Princess Street?)
I've been there on Sunday... Wednesday, I think I was at Loch Ness and with lots of luck not in the area of the flood. Just lots of storm and rain.
Sorry for not saying, it was on very, very short notice. :)

Antonella | 11568 comments Calathea wrote: "Steps? What steps? (Are we talking about the same thing on Princess Street?)"

I'm glad we were not there in the same day.

Scott Monument: you can climb up and have a lovely view of the surroundings. Not for people with claustrophobia or overweight though: the last bit is really narrow. I had been in Edinburgh at least other two times, but I never did it.

message 189: by Calathea (last edited Sep 30, 2012 08:33AM) (new)

Calathea | 6034 comments I didn't realise you can climb it! On the other hand I've been a bit on the run through the town to see most of it in one afternoon. It's really beautiful, though. I'd like to come back some day with more time on my hands.

What I climbed was St. Rules tower in St. Andrews. First you had to get through this gate (and believe me when I say, it was a tight fit) and then get up a narrow spiral staircase. At the top you have a wonderful view of the town and the sea.

And those of you who don't know why I just had to climb the tower, need to read The Student Prince! :D
